Mondasian Cybermen Returning to DOCTOR WHO, and More TV News

Cybermen, gods, preachers, oh my. Tuesday’s TV-Cap is the place to be because I have news about the old school Mondasian Cybermen coming back to Doctor Who in series 10, a look at Orlando Jones as Mr. Nancy in American Gods, word on how you can get caught up on Preacher, and more.

Callback. Peter Capaldi‘s time as the Twelfth Doctor is coming to an end. Series 10 will mark his last full season in the role. To send him out in style, the series is bringing back the Mondasian Cybermen. It’s Capaldi’s favorite Doctor Who enemy, so it’s fitting they’ll appear at the end of series 10 (they just started filming the last two episodes of the season). These are the original versions of the Cybermen, from the planet Mondas, and haven’t been seen on the time travel show for 50 years. Doctor Who returns with new episodes on April 15 on BBC America. Meet BritBox. We just talked about a British TV show, so this is the perfect time to tell you about BritBox. The subscription streaming service from BBC Worldwide and ITV is bringing the largest collection of British programming available to U.S. audiences, with many of the titles as exclusives. Oh boy. For example, it includes Blackadder and Miss Marple among many other titles. In addition to shows from the past, BritBox will make some new series available as soon as 24 hours after broadcast in the UK. The cost, after a free trial period, is $6.99/month. Right now BritBox is available on AppleTV, the web, Android, and iOS. Learn more at BritBox.com.

It’s Magic. Season three of The Flash isn’t done introducing new villains. DCComics.com revealed Abra Kadabra is coming. He’ll be played by David Dastmalchian. The actor recently appeared in Gotham.

Meet the Gang. Sony’s streaming network Crackle has released a batch o’ character posters for Snatch. The original series is set for a 10-episode first season; it’s “loosely” based on the film of the same name. Yahoo has a first look video showing Rupert Grint’s Charlie Cavendish-Scott working on special liquor sales. See him in the above character poster then head to the gallery to see more. Snatch debuts on March 16. [Images: Crackle]

Go to Church. AMC’s Preacher will be back with a second season this summer, so you need to get caught up. And hey, Hulu’s here to help. They’ll be the exclusive streaming home of season one of Preacher beginning on April 5. If you want to get the show based on the Preacher comic into your eyes sooner, you can do so at AMC.com (the first two eps will be available to watch without any sort of authentication).

Well, This Is Excellent. The wait for Starz’s American Gods is too long; the show doesn’t premiere until April 30. But! You can pass the time by reading an interview with Orlando Jones, a.k.a. Mr. Nancy/Anansi, at Vanity Fair. The article goes into the character’s intro, spinoff possibility, and features a first look at Jones in character. I’m in the middle of a re-read and this kind of thing is basically making me drool for the series.

I Spy… Let’s play a game. Watch the above promo and see if you can spot any familiar faces. Because believe it or not, Ewan McGregor is in that Fargo season three footage. He’s transformed, and I’m so curious about his role as Ray Stussy. Get some thoughts from Michael on this promo and other Fargo teases at here at Nerdist.

A Different Beauty. With the live-action Beauty and the Beast looming on the horizon, we’re all thinking about singing candlesticks and grand libraries. That’s all nice, but why not take a minute to remember the ’80s television series of the same name? George R.R. Martin worked on the show with Linda Hamilton and Ron Perlman and wanted it to be darker. Learn more right this way.

Relevant Times. How does The Americans relate to current events? The period the FX drama is set in–the Cold War in the 1980s–has a different context given the current state of U.S. and Russia relations. Read more about the connection here at Nerdist.

A Stand-In. Marvel’s Inhumans is filming in Hawaii and some photos from the set have leaked. My favorite part? The images include a giant, blue stand-in Lockjaw. I love that it was probably someone’s job was to transport the monstrous creature from the mainland to Hawaii. See the pics at CBR.
