DOCTOR WHO Christmas Special is Headed to the Movies

It’s almost a given at this point that big episodes of Doctor Who will be shown in cinemas shortly after their television debut. Stemming from the then-unheard-of plan to have the 50th Anniversary special—”The Day of the Doctor”—play in 3D in movie theaters all over the world, episodes of the perennial sci-fi classic have started popping up in select cities through Fathom Events. Well, we can now add the 2015 Christmas special to that list of episodes projected onto the big screen.

While it doesn’t yet have a title (or at least not one that’s been released to the public), we do know that the 2015 Christmas special will see the return of Alex Kingston’s River Song in her first appearance since the 2013 episode, “The Name of the Doctor.” To boot, it’ll be her very first time appearing with Twelfth Doctor Peter Capaldi. It’s pretty likely, at least to my thinking, that she’s being brought in to help ease the Doctor saying goodbye to Clara (who’s leaving at some point during season 9) and give the audience someone they know already before the long, cold months without Who.

The special—airing on BBC America on Christmas Day—will be in select cinemas on December 28 and 29 (that’s a Monday and Tuesday) at 7:30pm local time. And, also true to form, it won’t just be the episode; there will also be extras like an interview with Kingston and a 15-minute making-of featurette with Capaldi and showrunner Steven Moffat.

It’ll be a pretty packed few days for this type of thing; we already told you about Moffat’s other show, Sherlock, having its holiday special shown in cinemas on January 5 and 6.
