DOCTOR STRANGE Prequel Comic Reveals Info About Mads Mikkelsen’s Villain

There are spoilers ahead for the Doctor Strange movie. You’ve been warned!

Late last month, Marvel inadvertently revealed the identity of Mads Mikkelsen‘s character in Doctor Strange as Kaecilius, a very minor villain from the comics. It’s been 34 years since Kaecilius made his last appearance in the Marvel Universe, but the upcoming film will obviously raise his profile. Now we know a little bit more about Stephen Strange’s first cinematic adversary.

As reported by ComicBook.com, Kaecilius is the main character of the Doctor Strange prequel comic which was published Wednesday by Marvel. The first issue revealed that Kaecilius was at least initially on the side of the Ancient One and Wong against the forces of darkness. Within this story, Kaecilius and other members of his order went up against a thief who stole an object that can harness a dark energy, which Agent Carter fans may recognize as Zero Matter. Kaecilius hasn’t yet fallen into darkness in this story, but perhaps the prequel will reveal why he turned away from the Ancient One.

In Marvel’s comic book universe, Kaecilius dates back to some of the first Doctor Strange stories as a disciple of Baron Mordo, a role that is being played by Chiwetel Ejiofor in the film. Judging from the early glimpses of this movie, it appears that Baron Mordo isn’t a villain in this iteration and Kaecilius may be taking over that role while leaving room for Mordo to go bad in a potential sequel.

Doctor Strange will be released on November 4, but we may learn more about Mikkelsen’s character at Comic-Con later this month.
