Do Want: Oscar Isaac, Catherine Keener in HBO Miniseries from THE WIRE’s David Simon

What do you do when you combine HBO miniseries greatness with the mind of one of its most impressive creators, The Wire‘s David Simon, and add in a dash of the actorial (a word we just made up, yes) prowess of Oscar Isaac and Catherine Keener? Very likely our next TV obsession as it were, and lucky for all of us it’s about to become a reality. All three are teaming up to bring to life Lisa Belkin’s 1999 non-fiction book, Show Me a Hero.

Simon, who is teaming up once more with writer William F. Zorzi (of The Baltimore Sun and also, yeah, The Wire fame) to craft a six-hour series based on Belkin’s book, the subject matter of which is the highly sexy, highly stylized world of… housing desegregation. Now before you go running off disinterested, the story (which will be directed by none other than Paul Haggis, mind you!) at the heart of the series sounds rife with possibilities.

Show Me a Hero is slated to follow “the struggles of a young mayor ordered by the federal court to build low-income housing units in the city’s white neighborhoods” in an effort to, you guessed it, desegregate. Ultimately and unfortunately unsurprisingly, this throws the city into a bit of an in-fighting tailspin, sending the city, the government, the mayor, and its inhabitants against one another. Which is great breeding ground for stories intent on exploring the ideas of race and community and the meaning of home. All pretty important things to all of us folks who are, you know, alive.

Isaac will star as the aforementioned mayor, Nick Wasicsko, “the youngest big-city mayor in the nation” whereas Keener will play Mary Dorman, “an East Yonkers homeowner who comes to a remarkable realization during the battle over where to build low-income housing.”

Anyone else positively chomping at the bit here? Let’s all get excited about it in the comments.

Yes, please! There’s no way I’m not watching this. After Treme, I was already going through David Simon withdrawal.
