DJ Earworm Returns With ‘United State of Pop 2014’ To Mash Up All The Top 40 Songs From This Year

Ah, another year, another DJ Earworm mega-mashup and another reminder that virtually all Top 40 music sounds almost exactly the same. Or at least similar enough to chop up into lil bits and then reassemble as a sort of one giant, extra danceable Franken-song. We had some really great pop music come out this year (The Nerdist office has had many an argument about Taylor Swift in the past few months) and it always cool to see how Earworm is essentially able to distill the efforts of our biggest pop stars into a dingle club-ready crowd pleaser.

I used to live in a shit sty in Chicago with some good friends (sup, Stupid Bob) and it sort of became ritual to project top 40 music videos and beyond onto the wall outside my room (which, spoiler, was not really a room) on Friday nights, so there is definitely a time-capsule aspect of “United State of Pop 2014” that helps me orient the when and where of popular music and questionable decisions of 2014. But that is sort of the point of pop music, right? It can easily soundtrack your best days and worst days because it is ubiquitous and universally applicable as Bo Burnham deftly pointed out.

My favorite moment, and arguably the worst moment lol, is when Meghan Trainor’ “All About That Bass” and Jeremih’s “Don’t Tell ‘Em” weave in and out of their choruses like patchwork. If only Trainor’s part was a little less jarring or off-key, it would be impressively seamless. Also a big fan of the Charli XCX-only snippet from “Fancy.”

What is your favorite part of the mashup track? Let us know!

Oh, and have you you seen our Star Wars parody of “All About That Bass”? If not, you should totally treat yourself:

“Weird All” had a #1 album yet not one song in this mashup?!?!? Unacceptable!
