DIVERGENT Trilogy To Become Four Movies Instead of Three

Want more Divergent? Good, because you’re going to get it. Following the trends of movies such as The Hunger Games: Mockingjay and Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows, the final film in the Divergent franchise will be split into two parts. The films, based on Veronica Roth’s young adult book series, start Shailene Woodley as a protagonist in a dystopian world where all citizens get sorted into factions that drive their existence.

The first film in the series, Divergent, was released in March. Insurgent, the sequel, comes to theaters in 2015. What was going to be the final film, Allegiant, was already set for a March 2016 release, but now it will just be Allegiant Part 1. The second part of that film will follow in 2017.

Given the potential for box office earnings, it’s not surprising the Lionsgate/Summit made the call to split the final book. They’ve made the decision before (with The Hunger Games and Twilight), and it’s bound to make them extra money. And, they get to tell a bigger story. From a fan perspective, I’m optimistic about seeing what they’ll do.

Where do you think they’ll split Allegiant? Let us know your opinions in the comments.

The 3rd book wasn’t long enough or good enough to be made into 2 films. I agree with the others that it made sense with Harry Potter, that book was huge, but now it is just getting stupid!!! These other franchises are just out for more money, and they don’t care if the movies that they churn out are any good or not

  2. Lex says:

I think they should just make some of these books in to television shows instead of movies (e.g. Game of Thrones) and do like 3 solid seasons. I understand why breaking up the last movie in to two because you can actually show the back story. So many times they completely cut the back story in the movie and people are not feeling or understanding the impact. Hopefully though they find a good place to cut the book in to two, unlike the Harry Potter movie.

  3. Bewarethewriter says:

Is the story unveiled in Allegiant really not big enough? Remember, visual story telling is vastly different. By doing a two movie split there is far more opportunity to really showcase things like the factions failing, the back story of Tris’ mum, the conditions of the fringe, and the like.

  4. Cliff says:

I don’t think the last book is large enough story wise to justify this. Plus the payoff was just dumb.

Can’t wait for Star Wars: Episode VII – Part II to be announced.

At least it made sense with Haryy Potter. The rest not so much

  7. Ryan says:

Thanks a lot Harry Potter Movies now everybody is doing this now. SO DUMB! This trend needs to stop.
