Disney’s FROZEN Musical Gets Premiere Date and Creative Team

You finally got “Let It Go” from Disney’s Frozen out of your head, didn’t you? I’m so sorry to do this to you, but it’s going right back in there. Today we learned that Disney Theatrical Productions will bring us the Frozen musical in the spring of 2018. Oh, you’re not in New York? You think you’re safe from the commercials? Yeah, the production is going to do an earlier version in a yet-to-be-announced city in the summer of 2017. This is a normal thing for a Broadway production, of course. Feel free to spend the next year speculating on whether the people Boston, Atlanta, Toronto or Chicago are going to have an incurable ear worm first.

The production team will be made up of director Alex Timbers (Mozart in the Jungle) and Tony-winning choreographer Peter Darling, who was responsible for shows like Billy Elliot and Matilda. Previously announced members include the film’s Oscar-winning composers Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, and screenwriter and co-director Jennifer Lee, who will pen the adaptation. Tony winner Bob Crowly will create the costumes and scenery, Tony winner Natasha Katz will handle the lighting, and Peter Hylenski will do the sound. The musical director will be Stephen Oremus (Avenue Q, Wicked, The Book of Mormon).

Here’s a fun fact about the film: I got a chance to attend the early lead press day and learned that Disney filmed Idina Menzel while singing “Let It Go” so they could correctly animate the way she breathes during the song.

I actually really liked the film and, as a former musical theater person, it’s nice to know Disney is keeping people interested in the art form. It’s just that I got this song stuck in my head after my better half started singing it when I put my cold feet on him.

Are you guys excited to see this? Are the endless commercials going to slowly drive you insane? (Are any of you insane from the Wicked commercials? I’m pretty sure it’s incurable.) Tweet me/us @JennaBusch/@Nerdist and let us know. I’ve included the sing-a-long video below for you. Please don’t hurt me.
