Disney’s D23 Expo to Host Art and Costume Contests

Disney knows its films and parks continually inspire fans to create, and they’re encouraging innovation by announcing two contests for this year’s D23 Expo. If you’re not a Dis-nerd, you might not have heard of D23 Expo. It’s a three day convention that’s all Disney all the time. And yes, Pixar, Star Wars, and Marvel are featured at the expo since they’re owned by Disney. Like any other convention, the event has an exhibit hall full of vendors and features panels. And now they’ve added the Mousequerade and the D23 Expo Design Challenge!

Cosplayers do not kid around at D23 Expo. The one time I attended I saw multiple takes on every outfit Ariel wears in The Little Mermaid and several costumes inspired by theme park rides. It was my favorite part of the convention. Given that, I’m excited to hear about the Mousequerade. Participants need to sign up by April 30 and be prepared to create costumes that fit into the following categories: “Heroes Unmasked,” “Once Upon a Costume,” “The Wonderful Worlds of Disney,” “Best of Star Wars,” and “Weird, Wild, and Goofy!” The winner of the contest will win a trip for two to Disney’s Aulani resort and spa in Hawaii.

The D23 Expo Design Challenge is open to artists of all ages and is focused on the Sleeping Beauty Castle for Disneyland’s Diamond Anniversary. Artists can depict the castle in any medium they’d like and are required to submit sketches of proposed artwork to D23 by April 30. The winning art will be chosen before the expo, and pieces by 23 finalists will be displayed on the show floor. The winner of the contest gets $2,300.

D23 Expo takes place on August 14-16 this year. Who’s attending and will you participate in either of these contests? Let us know in the comments.
