Disney Sets a Date for MARY POPPINS RETURNS

Set the table for an upside down tea party, because Mary Poppins is coming back!

Disney has officially announced that Mary Poppins Returns is coming to theaters on December 25, 2018 with Emily Blunt in the title role along with Hamilton star and creator Lin-Manuel Miranda as a street lamplighter named Jack. Now that’s some serious star power! Into the Woods director Rob Marshall will be the man behind-the-camera for the sequel.

The original Mary Poppins movie from 1964 is one of the all-time great Disney films, even if the creator of Mary Poppins, P.L. Travers reportedly didn’t like it. Travers chronicled the adventures of Mary Poppins in eight books, but Mary Poppins Returns won’t be directly based on any of those titles. Instead, it’s a brand new story set in London during the great depression, as Mary reenters the lives of Jane and Michael (the children in the original story) and guides Michael’s three children.

If we had to guess, we’d predict that the movie may pick and choose certain elements of the remaining seven Mary Poppins novels, including the previously mentioned upside down tea party. And we’d also be willing to bet that animation will be a part of this film, since the first Mary Poppins movie also integrated live-action characters with animated creations.

There’s no word about whether Mary Poppins stars Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke will also appear in Mary Poppins Returns, but we can hope! At the very least they should have cameos, if they want to reenter that world. At the rate that Disney is remaking its film titles, we wouldn’t be shocked if Bedknobs and Broomsticks was next.
