Next month, Disney XD is rebooting DuckTales for a new generation of fans, as the classic adventures of the Disney Ducks get a much needed modern update. Unlike the original series, the new DuckTales is keeping Donald Duck as a main character and adding more of a Carl Barks touch to Uncle Scrooge McDuck’s globetrotting exploits. Now, Disney XD is offering fans a unique spin on DuckTales by letting them experience an episode in 360 degrees.
“The Lost Key of Tralla La” begins at the end of a quest to find the titular object. However, Scrooge and his nephews, as well as Webby, soon find themselves being chased by one of the series’ primary antagonists: Flintheart Glomgold, a billionaire and Scrooge’s rival.
There are a few things that we can infer from the video that we didn’t know before. For starters, the Money Bin appears to be positioned on the coast of Duckburg. In the comics, Scrooge’s Money Bin is landlocked on Killmotor Hill. The change appears to leave Scrooge’s fortune vulnerable to attack from the sea, although we doubt the old duck left his prized possessions without impressive defenses.
Intriguingly, the video also implies that Scrooge took the nephews and Webby out for an adventure without telling Donald or inviting him to come along. This implies that Donald wouldn’t have approved of it, and he instantly suspects that Scrooge is lying about it. The closing seconds also demonstrate Scrooge’s most consistent character trait: his greed. Even a joking suggestion by Louie about keeping the gold draws a wittering stare from Scrooge and fearful reactions from the children. Some things you just don’t joke about, even with family!
DuckTales will premiere with a one-hour TV movie on August 12, before the series officially gets started on September 23.
