Director Tim Miller Has Exited DEADPOOL 2

Earlier this week, the Domino casting rumors for Deadpool 2 seemed to indicate that the sequel to this year’s blockbuster R-rated superhero film was on track to begin filming in early 2017. But now, the sequel to Deadpool is reportedly going forward without Tim Miller, the director of the original film.

Deadline broke the story about Miller’s departure from Deadpool 2, reportedly due to creative differences between Miller and Ryan Reynolds, the actor who portrayed Deadpool and pushed hard for the first film over the course of a decade. However, the split between Miller and Reynolds appears to have been largely amicable, and Miller will be moving over to direct an adaptation of Daniel Suarez’s Influx for Fox. Nerdist reached out to Fox about this report, and we received confirmation that it is accurate.

Deadpool was Miller’s live-action directorial debut after a long career as a visual effects artist and animator. Miller is also widely credited as having a large role in capturing the tone of Deadpool alongside Reynolds and the screenwriting duo of Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. Reynolds, Reese, and Wernick will remain on the sequel. But if the film is going to make its 2017 start date, a new director needs to be named pretty quickly.

If we had to pick an ideal director who can handle R-rated action and comedy, we’d suggest Todd Phillips, the man behind The Hangover trilogy and War Dogs. But Deadpool 2 might also be well served by giving another director their first crack at a live-action film. Miller turned out to be an inspired choice for the material, and we hope that whoever follows in his footsteps will be able to remain true to the character and the franchise.
