Die Antwoord Share New Song, Announce They’re Breaking Up in 2017

Die Antwoord has a new album coming out on September 16, titled Mount Ninji and Da Nice Time Kid, which they previously described as dark but optimistic in tone. As that release date creeps closer, the South African rap duo has shared a new track called “Fat Faded F**k Face,” which you can listen to above.

The track is minimal in both its production and vocals, taking a subtle approach by almost mumbling and whispering their way through the eerie, DJ Muggs-produced instrumental, which one YouTube commenter astutely noted sounds very similar to, and may have even sampled, “TheArtOfCremation” by Bones.

In their promotional effort, Die Antwoord is also set to perform on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on September 19, and if you’re one of the first 200 people to buy the album on CD from Amoeba Records in Los Angeles, you can be in the crowd for free. Following that performance, they’ll embark on a North American tour in September and October, complete dates for which can be found on their website.

The news isn’t all good, though: In a recent interview with Exclaim, Ninja revealed that next September, Die Antwoord will have disbanded, saying, “Die Antwoord dies on that day. It’s all over. I feel beautiful about it. I’m not scared of the end. I’m a Ninja. I’m not scared of death.” Before they call it quits, though, they’re going to finish an art project for the MOCAA (Museum of Contemporary Modern Art Africa) in Cape Town, South Africa.

They’re also going to finish a movie they’ve been working on for ten years, titled South African Ninja. “That’s been our well that we’ve been drinking from and drawing from since the beginning of Die Antwoord,” Ninja said. “We actually started writing it before Die Antwoord. So, it’s been in the background for all of our ideas, which have all come from this film. It’s a South African gangster film that has African ninjas in it. Everything in the film is fictitious, like a regular movie, but it’s hard and raw, and everything has some parallel to our lives, so it’s got a surreal connection to everything.”

Listen to “Fat Faded F**k Face” above, and let us always remember possibly the strangest hip-hop group of the millennium.
