Details Emerge About STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS in IMAX

Guys. Guys. We still have four months until Star Wars: The Force Awakens comes out—way too long, I say—but when it comes out, luckily, there will be a number of different ways to see it. And since we’re assuming you’ll be going to see it multiple times, that’s good for variety’s sake. One of the main ways you’ll be able to see it will be in true IMAX 70mm.

We know at least one action sequence was shot using the big ol’ massive IMAX cameras, since they were spotted during the filming in the desert, and that means really big sequences on our screens. But this isn’t going to be shown on any old faux IMAX screen; to see these sequences the way they’ve been shot, you’ll have to go to an actual, proper, eight-story-tall IMAX theater.

According to the site Making Star Wars—via contributor Vahn who got to see the technical specs for the IMAX installation of the film—theaters that house such a screen will get an actual 70mm film print to project, keeping the natural film grain and color. Additionally, two separate film prints will be playing through the projector in order to achieve 3D, which is something they used to do in the olden days. And finally, there will be no shrunk down version of the IMAX print for those screens that aren’t really and truly IMAX screens but pretend to be. Those theaters will get the regular digital IMAX conversion form.

Vahn also provided some images to illustrate the difference between standard widescreen and IMAX with regard to the film.

He also warns that the pre-sale for tickets to the movie will probably go onsale sometime between mid-September and mid-October, so get your finances in order now.

I think it’s great that Abrams and company are trying to maintain the idea of “films” actually being projected on film—even if they’re fewer and harder to come by. I’ll certainly do my damnedest to see The Force Awakens in this format. How about you? Let me know below!
