Deny the Ladies Their Toys & They Will Make Their Own

Frankly, we ladies are sick of not having the cool merch for our favorite sci-fi characters. And since the general uproar that is heard every single time a big studio releases a film and then licenses an entire set of boys-only toys to go with them has little to no effect on the higher ups at Disney and Warner Brothers, some ladies are taking the frustration and problem out of the hands of the studios and solving it themselves. This awesome Australian mom went so far as to transform a collection of very girly dolls into science fiction superheroes for her young daughter, and now she’s teaching others to do the same.

Rebecca Millar initially started transforming dolls to solve the problem mentioned above. Her young daughter wanted a Black Widow doll (because who wouldn’t?), and while there were a few dolls available on the internet, none were available at a reasonable price that could actually be shipped to Australia. Seriously, the entire continent of Australia didn’t have Black Widow dolls. Millar bought her daughter a doll that traditionally would have been dressed in florescent dresses and covered in sparkles, and with some ingenious modifications presented her daughter with a very cool Black Widow doll of her very own.

The internet was so impressed with Millar’s skills that she was inspired to continue modifying existing dolls to create other heroines from her favorite science fiction movies. There are traditional superheroes in her collection like Black Widow and Gamora as well as stars of Star Trek, Teen Titans, and Rainbow Brite. She does full-blown tutorials on her website and has fully embraced the #GirlsLikeMarvelToo Twitter campaign to educate the executives at one of the studios that consistently allows licensing to go through without merchandise for girls mandated.

You can see all the awesome stuff Millar is doing and her ever-growing collection of lady superheroes on her Facebook page and make sure you’re following her on Twitter too!
