Back in 1984, director Wes Craven created Freddy Krueger for A Nightmare on Elm Street, a horror film that went on to become an unexpected franchise. Very few slashers can match Freddy for his wit or his gimmick of killing teenagers in their dreams. But what if Freddy was even deadlier in the original cut of the movie?

Bloody Disgusting posted a rarely seen deleted scene from A Nightmare on Elm Street that offers a significant change to the narrative for Heather Langenkamp’s Nancy. In the clip, Nancy’s mother, Marge (Ronee Blakley) confesses to her part in killing Freddy alongside the other parents in the neighborhood. A version of that scene is actually in the movie. The key change here is that Marge reveals that Freddy killed Heather’s older sibling before he was captured. And suddenly, it’s not just about survival for Nancy. Now, she’s got an added personal motivation to avenge her family’s loss as well as the murder of her friends.

As noted above, this clip isn’t new, but Bloody Disgusting‘s post appears to have revived interest in it. The deleted scene in question was included on a special Laserdisc edition of A Nightmare on Elm Street in 1996, but it has inexplicably been left out of most of the re-releases on DVD.

That’s unfortunate, because this scene is terrific. Langenkamp and Blakley give apt performances here, and it adds another layer of intensity to the story.
