Deep-Fried Twinkies Can Now Invade Your Freezer, if You Let Them

Deep-Fried Twinkies Can Now Invade Your Freezer, if You Let Them

With this kind of outside-the-box, inside-the-county-fair thinking, Twinkies would never have gone out of business the first time. Now, they may have just guaranteed that it won’t only be Woody Harrelson hunting for them in a zombie apocalypse. Starting Friday, this particular take on Hostess’ indestructible snack–a take that, surprisingly, only dates back to around 2000–will be available exclusively at Walmart (because of course it will) for three months before expanding to other stores. The Twinkie itself is coated with funnel cake batter and oil, and can then be either deep fried as the name and Satan intended, or baked in the oven.

Regular and chocolate varieties will be available. If you want the Ghostbusters Key Lime Slime versions battered and oil-bathed, you’ll have to do that yourself.

Concerned about calories? Prior to the new snacks being dropped in your fryer, reports the AP, the “vanilla-cream version has 220 calories, nine grams of fat and 16 grams of sugar. A regular Twinkie has 130 calories, four grams of fat and 14 grams of sugar.” For perspective, “A person who weighs about 150 pounds would need to run for 20 minutes at 10 mph, take a 40-minute spin class or do a 50-minute bike ride.” Worth it. No?

If home versions of county fair foods are going to become a thing, I vote for deep-fried frog legs next, since even regular frog legs aren’t exactly a grocery mainstay. What glob of greasy goodness from a sideshow stand would you want to have available in the frozen foods aisle? Be sure to tell us below.
