Debut Trailer for “The World’s End”

It’s finally here: the first teaser trailer for Edgar Wright’s The World’s End, the culmination of the “Blood and Ice Cream Trilogy” written by Wright and Simon Pegg, which began with Shaun of the Dead in 2004 and Hot Fuzz in 2007. The first two entries were comedy versions of a zombie film and an ’80s action-cop movie, respectively, and this final entry looks to be doing the same for alien invasion/body snatcher movies.

The trilogy, also called “The Three Flavours Cornetto” trilogy (after Krzysztof Kieslowski’s Three Colors trilogy… how’s that for film geek stuff?) is not connected in any narrative way, save for the appearance of excessive gore and a brand of ice cream cone called a Cornetto. Ed asks Shaun for one from the shop the morning of zombie outbreak in Shaun of the Dead, and Nicholas Angel asks Danny Butterman for one while they’re on a stakeout in Hot Fuzz. There has yet to be a sign of one in this first trailer for The World’s End, but we trust it’s there.

This new film is about five friends (Pegg, Nick Frost, Martin Freeman, Paddy Considine, and Eddie Marsan) who return to their old stomping grounds to attempt to finish a mighty pub crawl, finishing up at a pub called “The World’s End.” Unfortunately, it looks like the people of the town have been taken over by some fiendish, otherworldly force. Bad news, bears. Unlike the previous two films, Pegg’s character looks like the dumb one and Frost’s character looks to be the sensible, capable one. Surely, this was intentional. If it has foul-mouthed comedy, insane action, and sci-fi/horror to spare (and it appears it does), then we will have nothing to worry about. We’re in the Wright hands… get it? Cuz. Yeah. The World’s End hits US cinemas on August 23rd. Prepare for the end.

  2. Atticus says:

@mutedmuse If it’s any consolation they also put the shortcut fence joke in the trailer for Hot Fuzz.

  3. CJ says:

f’ yeah – that’s what I call a pub crawl (I think most of everyone viewing the trailer will forget “the fence scene” after they’ve begun their “drinking game” for this movie) 🙂

  4. mutedmuse says:

Looks brilliant, bit disappointed they already showed the fence joke though. It’s like showing Stan Lee’s cameo in the trailer :\

Now, how’s THAT for a slice of fried gold!
