You’ve probably heard about the film version of the anime series Death Note, based on the Japanese manga written by Tsugumi Ohba and illustrated by Takeshi Obata. Director Adam Wingard is adapting the series and the film will star Nat Wolff (The Fault in Our Stars) as Light Yagami, a student who finds a supernatural notebook which lets him kill people just by writing their name in it. His mission is to “cleanse the world of evil,” which puts him on the wrong side of the law and a certain detective named L.

The manga ran from from December 2003 to May 2006 in the manga magazine Weekly Shōnen Jump and the anime ran in Japan from October 3, 2006, to June 26, 2007. It’s had various video games based on the story as well as three live-action Japanese films and a TV drama. It was only a matter of time before it hit the big screen over here in the states.

Collider spoke to producer Roy Lee at DICE 2016 who said that while they’re still officially waiting for a green light for the project, they expect to film the movie this year. He also stated that the film will get an R-rating. He said, “It’s definitely for adults. It is zero chance it will be below an R-rating,” He also stated that Death Note, “will be one of the first manga adaptations that feels very grounded but still has fantastical elements.”

Maybe this was always the plan, but it’s certainly possible that we’re going to see more R-rated comic book, manga and anime adaptations now that Hollywood has seen the success of Deadpool in all its lovely raunchiness.
