DEADPOOL Co-Creator Rob Liefeld Draws Josh Brolin as Cable

In the end credits scene from Deadpool, Ryan Reynolds’ title character promised fans that another X-Men character, Cable, would be appearing in the sequel. Earlier this month, word broke that Josh Brolin, who already plays the villainous Thanos in Disney’s Marvel movies, will play Cable in Deadpool 2, and he’ll probably reprise his role in the inevitable X-Force film as well. Now, Cable and Deadpool co-creator Rob Liefeld has offered his take on the latest casting news by drawing Brolin as one of his signature characters.

On Instagram, Liefeld shared a pencil sketch that gave Brolin Cable’s distinctive facial scars, hair, and cybernetic eye with a familiar-looking costume. We think it’s a pretty great take on both Brolin and Cable!

In the early ’90s, Liefeld revitalized Marvel’s New Mutants when he and writer Fabian Nicieza introduced Cable as their new mentor. A few issues later, they co-created Deadpool and Domino shortly before relaunching New Mutants as X-Force. And while the original comics put Deadpool and Cable at odds with each other, Nicieza’s Cable and Deadpool ongoing series set the stage for their unlikely friendship and partnership.

Because comics can be a very strange industry, Liefeld and Nicieza are the co-creators of Cable, but not the creators of Cable’s alter ego, Nathan Christopher Summers. Years after he was introduced, Marvel revealed that Cable was the infant son of Scott Summers (better known as Cyclops on the X-Men) and Madelyne Pryor (a Jean Grey clone). As a baby, Cable was sent to the future to be cured of a devastating virus, and he didn’t reunite with his father until he was several decades older than Cyclops. It’s unclear if Deadpool 2 will use a similar origin for Cable.
