Fox Changes Release Dates for DEADPOOL 2, NEW MUTANTS, and GAMBIT

We’ve got some good news and some bad news to deliver for fans of the Marvel Comics Mutants over at Twentieth Century Fox. According to the Jeff Sneider, it has been announced that Deadpool 2 is coming out a two weeks early, now set for a May 18 release instead of June 1, a date which puts the sequel right between Avengers: Infinity War and Solo: A Star Wars: Story. I don’t think anyone is going to be upset about getting the Merc with the Mouth a little earlier.

Now for the bad news: It seems that The New Mutants, director Josh Boone’s horror take on the long running X-Men spin-off, is now coming out in February 22, 2019 instead of this April. A full 10 months later. And Gambit, a movie that has been plagued with production woes, and just lost its third director Gore Verbinski, is now coming out in June of 2019 instead of February of that year. You can check out Sneider’s original tweet announcing the switch-ups down below:

While the move for Gambit makes sense in light of the director news, why the huge change in release dates for The New Mutants? Apparently, while the movie tested decently with audiences, Fox wanted “more scares”, in light of the big success of recent horror movies like It, Get Out, and more. Horror is hot right now, so why not amp up the scares?

What doesn’t seem to be going on is anything to do with the Disney/Fox deal. Fox is proceeding with business as usual with Deadpool 2, dropping it one week before Solo comes out, something I doubt Disney would advocate for if they were the ones calling the shots. Until the ink is dry on this deal, Fox are clearly still running as an independent studio. Otherwise, I can’t image Disney wanting such a huge film so close to both of their own tentpole properties, Marvel and Star Wars.

What do you think of these big schedule changes? Are you bummed about waiting a whole year for New Mutants? And do you really think that Channing Tatum as Gambit movie is actually going to get made? Sound off down below in the comments.
