Last year, DC launched a new Black Canary comic in which Dinah Lance formed a band called Black Canary, as she tried to leave her superhero identity behind. Instead, Dinah and her bandmates ended up fighting monsters and nefarious organizations while on tour. After that rocky start, Black Canary has released its first EP of superhero punk rock music!
Black Canary co-writer Brenden Fletcher has teamed up with producer Joseph Donovan and Caveboy singer Michelle Bensimon for a new three-song EP using the Black Canary band name. You can listen to the EP here, and buy it on bandcamp.
DC has even thrown its support behind this endeavor by creating a Black Canary page on its official site, with profiles of Dinah (a.k.a. D.D.); the bandâs drummer, Lord Byron; keyboardist Paloma Terrific; and Ditto, the lead guitar player. The page also includes fictional tour dates in Gotham City, Metropolis, Keystone City, Central City, and other famous DC locations.
Of course, Black Canary is far from the first comic to feature musicians and real music. Marvelâs Spider-Gwen inspired the band Married with Sea Monsters to create songs as Gwen Stacyâs fictional band, The Mary Janes. And there may be some friendly competition between Black Canary and The Mary Janes on the horizon.
Heroes Con creative director Rico Renzi suggested a battle of the bands between Black Canary and The Mary Janes this June, and both bands appear to be up for it.
