DC Re-launches TEEN TITANS & SUICIDE SQUAD In July

Fans who were bummed out at the recent cancellation of long standing DC ongoing series Teen Titans and Suicide Squad, whose current series both end this month with issue #30, won’t have to wait much longer for their return. DC has announced that both books re-launch in July with brand new #1 issues and all-new creative teams.

First announced is Teen Titans, which is now being written by Will Pfeifer (Catwoman, Aquaman) with art by Kenneth Rocafort (Superman,Red Hood & The Outlaws.) Former Teen Titans writer Scott Lobdell will return to Red Hood & the Outlaws later that same month. The new line-up seems like a mash-up of the previous New 52 version (Red Robin, Wonder Girl, Bunker) with a little bit of the New Teen Titans/animated series characters (Beast Boy, Raven) thrown in for good measure. No sign of Superboy or Kid Flash from the previous team, although Pfeifer says, in talking with Newsarama, “something is in the works to possibly expand the cast with a member of the Superman and/or the Flash family.”  Personally, I was hoping to have Starfire and Cyborg as the team’s slightly older mentors, if only to have those core Titans characters together again, but I guess I’ll have to wait for Teen Titans: Earth One later this year for something that resembles my favorite line-up of the team.

Also getting a big splashy re-launch in July is New Suicide Squad, with the creative team of writer Sean Ryan, who also writes the final issue of the last volume of Suicide Squad this month, and artist Jeremy Roberts, who was the winner of the “Harley Quinn Open Talent Search” contest for DC last year. The new team line-up will feature the additions of Deathstroke, Black Manta and Joker’s Daughter, with returning characters Harley Quinn, Amanda Waller, and Deadshot.

It’s kind of fascinating that DC has both Deathstroke and Deadshot on the same team together, as well as Joker’s Daughter and Harley Quinn. Both pairs of characters are very similar visually and in many ways character wise as well (especially Deathstroke and Deadshot. And Joker’s Daughter and Harley Quinn have even been the same character before! *)  In an interview with IGN, it was revealed that team leader Amanda Waller will no longer have the autonomy she used to under the government-sponsored ARGUS, and that the team’s first mission will include a trip to Vladimir Putin’s Russia to recruit Pussy Riot.  OK, I’m kidding about the Pussy Riot part. But not the Putin’s Russia part.

New Suicide Squad #1 hits July 9th, while Teen Titans follows on July 16th.

*OK, so the original Joker’s Daughter was a Teen Titan who appeared in the late seventies, who wasn’t actually the Joker’s daughter, but Two-Face’s daughter. Her real name was Duela Dent. She was a good guy, though, and the Titans convinced her to drop the whole “I’m a mass murdering clown’s child” motif, and she became The Harlequin instead. She was wiped from existence in Crisis on Infinite Earths, and then DC used the Harlequin theme/costume for the far more popular Harley Quinn character. Eventually another Duela Dent showed up a few years ago, but she got New 52ed out of existence too.  And there’s your DC history lesson for the day.

  2. Mike says:

Wonder Girl has a lasso made of Hubba-Bubba? If she’s not careful she’s going to get it in her hair.

  3. Scott B. says:

DC internal conversation, “We’re relaunching Teen Titans! Make sure the cover has Wonder Girl’s breasts larger than all the other characters heads. Remember what we’re trying to sell here people!”

  4. Andy Brundrett says:

Great. Some more proof that the “New 52” is a failure. Thanks. Is there no continuity anywhere? DC is doing a great job ruining their characters with bad stories.

  5. Ahwehota says:

@jd – Looks like you got those backwards. Harley Quinn was made for the animated series, altho you are correct in that Harlequinn and Harley Quinn are definitely NOT the same. So in that case, it seems @Jaime is actually correct and I’m afraid Nerdist would be -1

  6. jd says:

    @Jaime False – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duela_Dent

“The Harlequinn” and Harley Quinn are not the same. +1 Nerdist

In fact, Harley Quinn was likely adapted from the gay, male Harlequinn pitch for Infinity, Inc. – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harlequin_(comics)#other_versions

    Hammers are cool.

  8. Tim says:

Pretend I know nothing about Joker’s daughter. Why the hell is she holding Thor’s hammer?

  9. Jaime says:

Uh, Harley Quinn was created SPECIFICALLY for Batman: The Animated Series by Bruce Timm (he based her design and personality on his friend Arleen Sorkin, who coincidentally ended up voicing the role). Fail, Nerdist, a big fat fail.
