DC Comics Unveils SCOOBY APOCALYPSE and More Updated Hanna-Barbera Comics

Get ready for Scooby Doo, Jonny Quest, and The Flintstones as you’ve never seen them before. DC Comics has announced ambitious plans to give several classic Hanna-Barbera cartoons modernized updates for an older audience. That means Jonny Quest is going to the future, and it’s the end of the world for Scooby Doo!

One of the first titles to launch will be Scooby Apocalypse, a comic that places Scooby Doo and his Mystery Incorporated pals in a very dark future. DC co-publisher and iconic artist Jim Lee drew the cover for Scooby Apocalypse, and he will be writing the series for artist Howard Porter and Keith Giffen.

Scooby Apocalypse

“I’m a huge Scooby Doo fan, as I think most people are,” said Lee during Entertainment Weekly’s initial report. “It’s a multigenerational obsession at this point, and we just thought it would just be really interesting to take the cartoon version of these characters and see where they would be if we took what existed in the very first iteration of the cartoon and moved it into this day and age.”

The Flintstones have been redesigned by Amanda Conner, with Mark Russell writing the new series. DC co-publisher Dan Didio added that “what you’ll see is that Amanda Conner really looked at the Flintstones and found a way to move them forward, even though they’re set in the past.”

The Flintstones

Mad Max Fury Road designer Mark Sexton and Ken Pontac are tackling Wacky Raceland. But perhaps the most intriguing title is Future Quest, which unites all of the Hanna-Barbera action heroes. That means that Jonny Quest, Space Ghost, The Herculoids, Frankenstein Jr, The Impossibles, Birdman, The Galaxy Trio, and Mightor are all going to be starring in the same series.

Future Quest 4

Darwyn Cooke, Evan “Doc” Shaner, and Jeff Parker will be the creative team behind Future Quest. The new line of Hanna-Barbera comics will begin rolling out this May. You can see more artwork from the new series in our gallery below.
