DC Comics Sitcom POWERLESS Heads to NBC

After making several superhero drama series in the past few years, DC Entertainment has sold its first sitcom! NBC has given a series order to Powerless, a new comedy that is loosely inspired by the “ordinary people” of the DC Universe.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Powerless will focus on the staff of an insurance office who have to live in a world where superheroes and supervillains are commonplace. Powerless has already lined up a very impressive cast, including High School Musical and Grease: Live star Vanessa Hudgens, Community veteran Danny Pudi, Firefly and Con Man’s Alan Tudyk, and A to Z actress Christina Kirk.

Hudgens will portray Emily, the lead character of Powerless. In the pilot episode, Emily is said to become a cult heroine after she stands up to the “larger-than-life figures” of the DC Universe and finds a way to be heroic without superpowers. But don’t expect to see Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, or other DC icons on this show. So far, the only confirmed superhero on Powerless is Crimson Fox, and she’s not exactly A-list material.

That said, Powerless does have the advantage of drawing upon DC’s vast character library, which extends far beyond the company’s most well known characters. The characters who are further down the list have some great comedic potential, like Elongated Man, Plastic Man, B’wana Beast, and other creations who would probably go unused without a series like Powerless to give them an occasional spotlight.
