Is the DC Cinematic Universe Focusing On Their Villains?

Last year, we shared a theory that the DC Extended Universe‘s future may revolve around its villains. Now, even industry heavyweights like The Hollywood Reporter are taking notice of DC’s journey into darkness. It’s not hard to see why. As of this week, there are no less than three different Joker movies currently in development, two of which would feature Jared Leto reprising his role from Suicide Squad. And Margot Robbie has more than a few options for her next big screen appearance as Harley Quinn. Today’s Nerdist News reviews DC’s potential new direction and what it may mean for the DCEU.

Join host and future Batman villain, Jessica Chobot, as she goes over the many different possibilities that lie ahead after Justice League. The post-credits scene in that movie teased a Legion of Doom alliance between Lex Luthor and Deathstroke, who is also in line for his own film. Wonder Woman 2 will introduce Cheetah while Black Manta will make his debut in Aquaman; which would help fill out the Legion’s lineup. It could even lead to a Legion of Doom film.

Why are the bad guys getting so much love from DC? It’s probably because DC has some of the very best villains in comics just waiting to make their big screen debuts. It’s also an area where Marvel has not fared as well. We’ve loved Killmonger and Thanos’ appearances in Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War, respectively. But aside from those two and Loki, it’s hard to picture any of the current MCU villains holding down their own film.

Going evil could also be a way for DC’s movies to further separate themselves from the MCU. And by building up the villains, DC may also be able to repair the reputation of its assembled heroes. If Warner Bros. and DC take their time, the inevitable battle between the Justice League and the Legion of Doom could become a major movie event worthy of the hype.
