We’ve had a vague idea of what movies in the DCEU would make it to the big screen, but most of those announcements came before the tepid response to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad last year, and definitely before the phenomenally positive reception and box office to Wonder Woman earlier this summer. So when the DC Comics portion of the Warner Bros Entertainment panel at San Diego Comic-Con began with a series of titles, we were way more surprised by most of them than we expected.
On top of the already-known The Batman (which will be directed by Matt Reeves, and apparently starring Ben Affleck), and the nearly assured Wonder Woman 2, we also got confirmation on a lot of hopefully awesome movies. Okay, sure, Suicide Squad 2 isn’t maybe the most exciting prospect given the first one, but how about this for a slate of other films?
Shazam! announced on Friday will introduce the world to Billy Batson’s Captain Marvel (yes, legally different from Marvel’s). Next up, Justice League Dark, a very exciting prospect which, if it’s anything like the script Guillermo del Toro tried to make, will bring John Constantine, Zatanna, Deadman, Swamp Thing, and others into the DCEU fold. In addition to this, we have Batgirl, which will be directed by Joss Whedon. That Green Lantern Corps movie is still in the cards, and given that the newest Justice League trailer mentions them, it seems the Lanterns will be a big part of the DC Extended Universe.
The final reveal is the most intriguing by far: The long gestating Flash movie, which has lost two directors and who knows how many scripts, will be subtitled Flashpoint, which means Geoff Johns’ 2011 universe-warping time-travel epic, which saw Barry Allen drastically change the present by going back in time and saving his mother, will come to the big screen, and possibly reboot the DCEU, or at least pay off those weird dream sequences from BvS.
