Grant Morrison’s WONDER WOMAN: EARTH ONE Gets Release Date

When William Marston created Wonder Woman for DC Comics back in 1941, his intent from the get-go was to create a feminist icon for a generation of young women. Women who—at the time—barely had the right to vote and were just beginning to have their voices heard and in a strongly patriarchal society. His version of Wonder Woman was an ambassador of peace in a time of war, and an emissary from an advanced race of women who had learned to live without violence and prejudice.

Now legendary writer Grant Morrison—known for his incredible runs on titles like Batman, New X-Men, JLA, Animal Man, and All-Star Superman, as well as creator owned works like The Filth and The Invisibles—has set his sights on reinventing the Amazon princess for the 21st Century by embracing the original feminist agenda of the character and updating it for today. And this week, DC Comics set a date for Morrison’s Wonder Woman: Earth One for April 2016, and released the first image of the cover in full color, which you can see below:

When DC Comics decided to reboot Wonder Woman back in 2011 for their ‘New 52‘ relaunch, they threw out most of the ideals Marston instilled in the character and her mythos outside of the more purely superficial stuff. Diana was still princess of the Amazons, but instead of enlightened immortals, these Amazons were brutal barbarians who traded their male children into slavery in exchange for weapons and murdered their baby’s fathers. Instead of being powered by the Goddesses of Olympus, Diana now received her power from her recently discovered father Zeus—the symbol of patriarchal power. Instead of being an ambassador of peace, she was literally now the God of War. Although the New 52 Wonder Woman gained more fans than ever before, she was now a lot more conservative and less radical than she was in 1942.

Along with the cover image, DC has also gave us the graphic novel’s first full, official synopsis:

From the masterful minds of Grant Morrison (Final Crisis, Multiversity) and Yanick Paquette (Swamp Thing, Batman, Inc.) comes the most provocative origin of Wonder Woman you’ve ever seen — a wholly unique retelling that still honors her origins.

For millennia, the Amazons of Paradise Island have created a thriving society away from the blight of man. One resident, however, is not satisfied with this secluded life — Diana, Princess of the Amazons, knows there is more in this world and wants to explore, only to be frustrated by her protective mother, Hippolyta. Diana finds her escape when Air Force pilot Steve Trevor, the first man she has ever seen, crashes onto their shores. With his life hanging in the balance, Diana ventures into the long forbidden world of men. The Amazons chase after her and bring her back to Paradise Island in chains to face trial for breaking their oldest law…staying separated from the world that wronged them.

Thought provoking yet reverent, thoroughly modern but still timeless, the power and courage of Paradise Island’s greatest champion — Wonder Woman — is introduced in this new addition to DC’s New York Times best selling Earth One original graphic novel series.

Wonder Woman: Earth One – Volume 1 will be available in comic book shops on April 6th, 2016 and everywhere books are sold on April 12th, 2016.
