I can’t believe I missed this when it first debuted in mid-May, but I was in the midst of a Xanax-induced slumber on a transatlantic flight, so you’ll have to forgive me.
David Duchovny is a singer â so much so he’s putting out a song titled “Hell or Highwater” from his debut album of the same name. Here are some sample lyrics: “In the test of our love, if it’s multiple choice, I gotta mark ‘none of the above.'”
What!!!! This is the best thing ever.
I had no idea that David Duchovny moonlighted as classic rock crooner. Before twenty minutes ago, I was more willing to believe in Agent Mulder’s paranormal worldview than the fact that the actor who played him was making music that sounds nearly exactly like the Wallflowers in 1996. It is things like this that make me think existentially and ontologically. Where did this come from? Is my purpose on Earth to hear this? Where did I come from? Where are we really?  ⬠⪠Doo-doo-doo-doo-doooo-doo ⪠â«
In the music video we get a comprehensive tour of the studio and musicians that Duchovny selected to help realize his dreams of one day arising from his own ashes as a golden-feathered phoenix EGOTing. After we see some cuts of Duchovny singing indoors with sunglasses, there is some pretty tight b-roll of calm and stormy oceans as the actor sings earnestly about the vicissitudes of love and life. If you weren’t clear–it’s like an ocean.
“I can’t make it rain,” Duchovny delicately admits in the bridge of the track. I beg to differ, Mr. Duchovny. I beg to differ.
The X-Files returns to FOX for a six-episode run this January, and Duchovny currently stars in Aquarius on NBC. His album, Hell Or Highwater is out now.
