Good news for our friends on the Dr. Who side of the Atlantic: Here Lies Love, the collaborative musical by David Byrne and Fatboy Slim is moving overseas and hitting London this fall, where it will open the new Dorfman Theatre (formerly the Cottesloe, at the National Theatre), running from September 30th to January 8th. Directed by the Tony Award-winning Alex Timbers (who also helmed The Pee-wee Herman Show on Broadway), Here Lies Love surveys the rise and fall of the First Lady of the Philippines, Imelda Marcos (she of the infamous and infinite shoe collection), and is based on Byrne’s 2010 concept album.
As one might expect from a project by two renowned iconoclasts like Byrne and Slim, Here Lies Love is no ordinary stage musical. Instead, it’s an immersive experience in which the entire theater metamorphosizes into a high-energy dance club, complete with 360-degree staging. Audience members seated in the pit, for example, will dance with the production’s actors. Twenty pit seats will be available for only 20 pounds per ticket every Friday at twelve noon for the coming week’s performances (each of which will run for ninety minutes).
For more on the show, check out the UK’s National Theatre website… As good as Byrne’s solo work is, he’s often at his best when working with a collaborator. Everyone from St. Vincent to Anna Calvi, from Jonathan Demme to Bernardo Bertolucci have brought out exciting new sides to his work. So I can’t wait to see what he’s done when partnered with another music pioneer like Fatboy Slim. Just get Here Lies Love to LA soon, okay, guys? We love awesome things here too!

Really want to see this sometime… Byrne is my single favorite musician.
