On January 8, 2016, David Bowie will celebrate his 69th birthday. Although he probably doesn’t party as hard now as he used to as a spry youngster, there will still be plenty to get excited about: namely, the release of Blackstar, his upcoming studio album scheduled for release on that same day. Rumors have been flying ever since the record was announced, and all the hearsay is a lot to live up to.
It has been reported that Blackstar will be “an album of long, jazzy jams mixed with the kind of driving beat pioneered by Seventies German bands Can and Kraftwerk,†much like the records he made in the ’70s with producer Brian Eno. The album’s title track is also allegedly ten minutes long and will be released on November 19. You can listen to a portion of it now below, in the opening credits of The Last Panther.
The album was recorded at Magic Shop studio in New York with local jazz musicians. The structure of the album sounds similar to that of Bowie’s 1975 album Station To Station, which immediately precedes the albums on which he collaborated with Eno. Additionally, Blackstar is supposedly 45 minutes long and consists of seven tracks, while Station to Station had six songs that totaled 38 minutes.
