When legendary musician David Bowie passed away back in early January, we should have all known that it was a harbinger that 2016 was going to be, shall we say, a less than stellar year. After all, we lost someone so uniquely talented that day, we should have known the world would never be as cool a place again without Bowie. Fortunately, the man left an incredible legacy of music and film behind, so he continues to live on in our music collections and Spotify playlists for all time. And now, he’ll live on as an official emoji as well.
Thanks to the folks at Vulture, we’ve learned that the upcoming iOS 10.2 update will bring with it two new David Bowie emojis, one male, the other female, which will feature the iconic lightning-bolt face paint that Bowie so famously wore on the cover of his 1973 album Aladdin Sane. While both of these are cool, I do think that one gender-fluid/androgynous Bowie emoji would have been a far better fit for his personality, but we’ll take what we can get. You can see what the two new Bowie emojis will look like down below:
What’s interesting is that the new Bowie emojis are part of the “profession” selection, which includes jobs like chef, cowboy/cowgirl, firefighters, painters, doctors, scientists, pilots, and now David Bowie too? Didn’t realize that the passing of Bowie left a job opening for another new Bowie to take his place, but hey, if that’s how they found a way to sneak a David Bowie emoji in, then so be it.
What do you think of the new iOS 10.2 David Bowie emoji? And do you think it’s only fair that Prince get one next? Leave us your thoughts down below in the comments.
