DARK SOULS and NINJA GAIDEN Had A Baby and Its Name is NIOH

Aside from the Gravity Rush and Bloodborne: The Old Hunters (which we loved) announcements, one of our favorite reveals from PlayStation’s Tokyo Game Show presentation back in September was the re-reveal of Team Ninja’s Nioh–originally intended as a PS3 title–which is slated for a worldwide release on the PS4 some time this year. While we haven’t heard or seen much of the title since then, the folks behind it shared six minutes of gameplay. Check it out above!

As we’ve previously mentioned, the art-style is reminiscent of both Team Ninja’s Ninja Gaiden franchise and FromSoftware’s Bloodborne (in terms of color pallet). It’s a third-person samurai saga featuring katanas, fiery demons, and of course, a ton of blood.

But, that’s not the only comparison that’s been drawn. What made me particularly interested in the title was how similar the gameplay looked to the Souls series. From what we’ve seen so far, players will rely on a stamina meter when planning out an attack, blocking, or evading. It looks aggressive, and exciting. So if you’re into Dark Souls, Bloodborne, or Ninja Gaiden, this will likely be your cup of tea.

For those who aren’t familiar with it, the game–which is reportedly based on an unfinished script by Japanese filmmaker Akira Kurosawa–was originally announced by Koei back in 2004. After the title missed its 2006 launch window, not much was said until 2009, when Koei confirmed that it was still in development. After years of assuring fans that it was coming, the game was re-revealed as a PS4 title.
