Crunchyroll Drops a Look at HIGH GUARDIAN SPICE, Its 1st Original Series

Over the last decade, Crunchyroll has essentially become the Netflix of anime, steadily adding more and more new animated series to its lineup, and even co-producing a few shows. But now Crunchyroll is leveling up for a slate of original anime to hit in 2019. One of the first Crunchyroll originals will be High Guardian Spice, and the first behind-the-scenes preview for the series has offered viewers a taste of what they can expect.

Via Polygon, High Guardian Spice is a coming-of-age story about four girls: Parsley, Sage, Rosemary, and Thyme. The girls have been brought together at Guardian Academy to refine their magical talents and fighting capabilities to become guardians themselves. The description teases that the girls will be facing the usual trials and tribulations as they grow up while preparing for a powerful threat that could destroy them.

While Crunchyroll isn’t quite ready to show off High Guardian Spice‘s first trailer or footage, the above video with comments from series creator Raye Rodriguez and other creative team members does have us excited to see more. Perhaps the most intriguing aspect of the clip is Ellation Studios’ Margaret Dean passion for making the show as a traditional 2D animated series, as well as the creative team’s devotion to diversity of characters and an all-female writing team.

Comic fans may also recognize High Guardian Spice staff writer Kate Leth, the co-writer of Marvel’s Patsy Walker, A.K.A. Hellcat! as well as other comics including Adventure Time and Edward Scissorhands. There appears to be a lot of talent behind this series, and we’re eager to see High Guardian Spice when it debuts in 2019.
