New CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON: SWORD OF DESTINY Trailer

When it was released back in 2000, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon changed the perception of martial arts movies in the United States. It was no longer about cheesy (but awesome) kung fu flicks. This was an epic love story with some mind-blowing wuxia and stellar swordplay. Today we have a brand new trailer for the sequel, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny. And you thought the title for the new Batman film was long!

In the sequel, Michelle Yeoh is back as Yu Shu Lien, the master swordsman. She’s training a young girl who makes the grave mistake of falling in love, though, considering the connection between the sweethearts, it seems inevitable. If you recall, love is what messed everything up last time. Adding Donnie Yen (Silent Wolf) to the mix is going to give this film an extra something special. If you haven’t seen his work in the film Ip Man, you owe it to yourself to watch. It’s absolutely stunning.

The official synopsis for the film is a little more inscrutable:

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny tells an epic story of lost love, young love, a legendary sword and one last opportunity at redemption, set against breathtaking action in an epic martial arts battle between good and evil that will decide the fate of the Martial World.”

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny is based on the novel “Iron Knight, Silver Vase” by Wang Dulu (the fifth novel in the Crane Iron Pentalogy) and is directed by Yuen Wo-Ping, the famed martial arts choreographer behind Kill Bill and The Matrix trilogy. This one is going to have a pretty unique release as it will premiere in limited IMAX theaters as well as on Netflix on February 26, 2016.

The trailer is pretty spectacular and if you’re a fan of martial arts films at all, this is likely going to have you swinging your broomstick around your house. We’d love to hear what you think and if you believe this film is going to live up to its predecessor. Tweet me/us @JennaBusch/@Nerdist with your thoughts on the trailer. Will love just screw things up again? Is this just Jen redux? Why does Michelle Yeoh never age? It’s freaky!
