Creepy FRIDAY THE 13TH Game Looking for $700,000 in Kickstarter Funding

We’ve played our fair share of horror games, but it seems like developers have struggled to nail the Friday the 13th franchise in modern times. Sure, Jason Vorhees recently stalked his way into Mortal Kombat X as one of the playable DLC characters, but as far as starring in his own game is concerned, we’ve been deprived. Luckily, the folks at Gun Media launched a brand new Kickstarter today for a Friday the 13th game.

Friday the 13th: The Game–as it’s being referred to on the funding page–is described as a “third-person, asymmetrical multiplayer title where one player controls Jason Vorhees while the remaining seven control camp counselors trying to survive the night.” That means it’s a 1v7 multiplayer title set in the semi-open world of Camp Crystal Lake.

Alongside the launch of the Kickstarter, Gun Media released an official announcement trailer (above), as well as an informational pitch video (below):

Their goal is to reach $700,000 within the next 31 days. While that may sound like a lot, the project has already raised over $100,000 at the time of this writing. I wouldn’t be surprised if the stretch goal was reached by the end of the day, especially when you consider the talented group of people behind the game.

As the video revealed, a ton of horror legends have joined the the team working on the title, including the likes of: Friday the 13th director Sean S. Cunningham, actor and award-winning special makeup effects icon, Tom Savini; the actor behind the hockey mask-wearing villain in Friday the 13th films (7,8,9, & 10), Kane Hodder; and the composer responsible for the seminal film’s original score, Harry Manfredini. Whew! That’s a lot of big names.

The team originally revealed the game last year under the title Slasher Vol. 1: Summer Camp. But, soon after the announcement, Cunningham himself reached out to Gun Media, and eventually offered them the license to the Friday the 13th video game franchise. Kane Hodder was later added to the team to reprise his role as Jason, do all of the motion capture for the game, and direct a team of stunt men.

Jason Mask

One of the coolest aspects about the game is that players will be able to actually play as Jason. So, once you start up a multiplayer match, you’ll either be one of 7 camp counselors, or the man behind the mask. The developer elaborated, “We’ve dedicated an incredible amount of time to balancing out counselor vs. Jason scenarios to ensure fans are every bit as excited by the possibility of slaying jocks, nerds, and cheerleaders as Jason Voorhees, while simultaneously giving you that sense of challenge and fear from being a counselor.”

They’ll also be implementing a “movie trailer” system that will basically sum up the best moments from the match in the form of a 1980’s movie trailer. This is a cool feature that will fit right in with the increasing desire to share gaming experiences on social media. I can’t wait to see these flooding the YouTube space.
