Crash Bandicoot Will Bandicoot Again In 2017

The Playstation Experience just wrapped up and this year has seen a lot of older IPs finding new life in remastered–or “remastered plus–experiences. We already covered PaRappa The Rapper getting a 2017 rebirth, and that will hit Playstation alongside such classics as WipeOut, LocoRoco, and Patapon. Now we also are getting our first real information about the return of America’s favorite… uh… bandicoot.

That’s right: Crash Bandicoot is back.

The N. Sane Trilogy was first announced back at E3, but no details accompanied it. Now we’re finding out that it is a remaster of the original trilogy of games, albeit updated with an incredible graphical overhaul.

From the information released on the Playstation Blog, it seems there’s been quite a journey to get to this point. The original game, made by an early Naughty Dog team, was built on code that was nearly unusable. This left the Playstation team with a choice as to whether a remaster could be built at all, or if they’d need to remake the game from the ground up.

To that end, they wound up playing all of the games themselves to highlight both what was the most fun about them in 2016 and also what had made them such delightful experiences back in 1996. Then they rebuilt levels based on the original geometry and added in modern gaming touches like a better checkpoint/save system. There are time trails in all three games and a lot of small tweaks to the game with 20 years of hindsight, which is a rare opportunity to redo a game and possibly perfect it.

If you’re really itching to revisit Crash’s world unadjusted, then you can still buy the original version of the game on the Playstation Store. That is if you can’t wait a couple months for this new release.

So what do you think? Is a Crash Bandicoot remaster worth getting this excited over or are you disappointed we aren’t getting a new game instead? Sound off in the comments.
