Could PROJECT ARENA Be the TRON VR Game We’ve Always Wanted?

Few films have been as influential on computer graphics as the original Tron, and yet there are shockingly few Tron video games. But if CCP Games has their way, fans may finally get to have a Game Grid experience of their own!

Via a report on Road to VR, CCP games showed off its very Tron-like game, Project Arena at Fanfest 2016 in Reykjavik, Iceland. Project Arena is currently in development for the Oculus Rift and it has no official ties to the Disney film. But there’s no denying the influence of Tron’s famous disc battle scenes.

Road to VR also posted a video from Project Arena’s prototype in “brawl mode,” as a player dueled with a computer-controlled opponent in a disc battle. Even in this early form, this game looks like a lot of fun!

“It’s amazing…to feel how accurate it is,” related CCP Games CEO Hilmar Veigar Pétursson during a presentation at Fanfest 2016. “We’re kind of hoping this becomes an eSport, but it’s more like an eSport-sport, because it’s an actual sport.”

This is a game that would only benefit from an official license from Disney. Because as cool as this looks, Project Arena would be even better if it could use the Tron characters, music, and signature effects. It’s already pretty close to mimicking Tron, which may not escape Disney’s notice. One way or the other, we want to play this game!

What do you think about the early footage of Project Arena? Are you ready to get your Tron on? Upload your thoughts to the comment section below!
