Star Wars rumors aren’t limited to Episode VII/The Force Awakens, they cover anything and everything up to and including television. /Film is reporting that they’ve heard Lucasfilm knows when Star Wars Rebels will end, and that the company has another Star Wars animated series lined up to follow it.
Star Wars Rebels was renewed for a second season by Disney before it even aired. Like Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Rebels has a set ending point because of the era in which it takes place. When Rebels begins, it’s five years before the events of A New Hope. One season doesn’t necessarily have to cover a single year on the timeline, and the creative forces behind Rebels could stretch or shorten those years as necessary. If it matches The Clone Wars run, Rebels could air for six seasons. They’re not beholden to that template though.
/Film states Disney and Lucasfilm have “about” three or four seasons planned for Star Wars Rebels. That takes us to 2017-2018. They would then switch gears and debut a new animated series set after Episode VII. That means the series would have a fresh cast and could even pull some characters from the sequel trilogy films to the television.
There’s no confirmation of this rumor from official sources, but the idea makes sense. Part of the idea behind Rebels is that it stepped away from the prequel trilogy time period and put fans in an original trilogy state of mind since some characters from those films will be in Episode VII. Rebels grabs the attention of longtime fans and is a great introduction for kids and newcomers. An animated series set during the sequel trilogy would have the same effect and bring the characters and events into focus. I’m okay with that. Plus, I don’t mind when television series have a planned endpoint. Not every show needs to air for seasons upon seasons.
What do you think of the possibility of Rebels wrapping after four seasons and Lucasfilm kicking off a new animated series? Let us know in the comments.
