Confirmed: Marvel’s Netflix Shows Will Be Part of The Marvel Cinematic Universe

Because not even news of a Justice League movie will slow them down, the Marvel camp has dropped a very reassuring tidbit about their upcoming slate of Netflix shows, currently being dubbed the “Defenders Saga” among fans. One of the biggest questions surrounding the upcoming series is: Is it part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Today, we get an answer, thanks to Marvel Entertainment’s Chief Creative Officer Joe Quesada, who recently guested on Kevin Smith‘s Fat Man on Batman podcast and said, yes, they’re part of the MCU: “There will be some inter-connectivity, much like the movies. They will exist within the cinematic universe again, so this is all the same world as S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Avengers.”

In regards to the tone of the series, Quesada added, “Although these are superhero stories, this is different now. This is the street level… this is the street level noir side of the Marvel Universe. Something that you haven’t really, really seen in any of our Marvel movies. And probably more ground level, than I think you’ve seen. This is not like us doing Batman, Dark Knight or any of that stuff. This is very Marvel doing street level superheroes.”

Considering one of the major things that has always separated Marvel and DC is Marvel’s push for more grounded heroes rather than myth-building ones like Superman and Batman, this makes complete sense and really ups the excitement level for the first series in the run, Daredevil. There’s still no word on the time period of the series, which is something that’s been up for debate, as the Hell’s Kitchen of today is not what it was when these comic book series were originally conceived.

Daredevil is slated to hit Netflix sometime in 2015.

  1. Proky says:

They could finally make Netflix available here…

  2. Jasmine says:

@Bryan yessss plz Hawkguy and lady hawkeye cameos too would be great, taking down tracksuit vamps on my television

  3. Michael says:

There’s been talk for some years about Terry Crews as Luke Cage. I’d LOVE to see that happen! Good actor, adopt at both comedy and drama, and be already has the build to play the modern day Power Man.

  4. Jonathan says:

No, Nicole. Iron Fist doesn’t have an iron… fist. Not a literal thing. Danny Rand is Iron Fist, who is a martial artist and monk with mystical powers.

  5. Darren says:

I think a Marvel Punisher series would be totally appropriate on HBO. Like a ‘Marvel MAX’ to give a more adult-base to the universe. It should serialize Garth Ennis’ run, which was amazing (see also Jason Aaron’s run).

  6. Nicole says:

Isn’t Bucky from Winter Soldier Iron Fist?

  7. Daniel says:

Cool, as long as this doesn’t mean the maturity level will be dumbed down for a wider audience. The Jessica Jones of the Netflix show should be the Jessica Jones of Alias.

  8. Steven says:

In the war between DC and Marvel, we’re all the winners. Both companies will make some great stuff and some not so great stuff.

And, we can entertain ourselves by watching the great stuff and complaining endlessly about the not so great stuff.

  9. Sarah says:

Myth-building ones…you mean like Marvel’s Thor? And Batman IS grounded….he’s human. Get your facts right.

  10. CJMErl says:

…wait, wasn’t this news confirmed, like, a REALLY long time ago? Like, back when these series were first announced?

  11. Zachary Brooks says:

Hopefully this means that Deadpool will get a series or even a Deadpool / Cable. I would be nice.

  12. grobs says:

It isn’t that marvel is soooOoooOoooo grounded, it’s that they keep their heroes and the spectacle fun.

Did you leave the dark knight or man of steel with an overwhelming sense of joy and life is good? Did you wanna go back and see it again with the wife and kids?

Maybe Nolan and Snyder are too gloom and doom and toooooOoooOoo grounded…..

  13. grobs says:

Yea, that’s exactly what warners needs, a hack tron retreader and another shit cruise movie contributor to right the ship. All they had going for them was Nolan and now he’s out.

And yea, dcs been soOoOoooOoo grounded in sissy wishing rings, Banes fur collar and nipples and fixing batmans broken back with Turkish prison punches they still have yet to get their bigger properties (wonder woman, flash) on screen while Marvels putting their c-list 70s space characters in cinemas this August.

  14. Spencer says:

Can’t wait for Luke Cage and Iron Fist! I hope Luke Cage swears a lot like in the comics but he’ll probably not. I have a feeling this Daredevil will be better than the terribel movie from 10 years ago.

  15. vilan says:

are the shows live action or animated?

  16. Coren says:

Sorry Tyler, but critics and sales don’t bear you out at all. While DC is bleaking up their most positive and brightest superheroes, Marvel is knocking it out of the park in whatever genre they turn their hands to. WW2, Spy, big budget tent pole, action, sci-fi, comedy, Marvel’s doing great all around.

DC did Batman, and Arrow on the small screen.

  17. Badd Andy says:

I was thinking, thank God Affleck isn’t going to be Daredevil. And DC is putting all they’re chips on him. Hey DC! On your left!

  18. Tyler says:

Yes, Marvel is s0o0o0o into “grounded” heroes (not really). Hats off to Marvel, though. In regards to quantity (definitely not quality seeing as most of their movies are average or just have childlike appeal and imagination) of Marvel entertainment that is not comic books, they’ve far outdone DC. If DC wants to compete, they are going to have to probably drop Zack Snyder and get someone better like Joseph Kosinski into the creativity mix.

  19. Dave B says:

I really hope this will be available outside of the USA

  20. Brad "Fester" Huggins says:

^I wish I could like your comment.

  21. Dave says:

I wish we could get some 70’s Power man and Iron Fist, with Luke Cage in the pirate boots and chain belt and Danny with high collar. Or failing that, at least a flash-back episode showing them in their 70’s regalia.

  22. Bryan says:

I desperately want to see The Tracksuit Vampires make an appearance on these shows.
