Composer Angelo Badalamenti Set to Return for New TWIN PEAKS

In the same way you probably can’t imagine the films of Steven Spielberg without the music of composer John Williams, or Tim Burton movies without a Danny Elfman score, much of the film oeuvre of David Lynch is inextricably linked with the haunting music of composer Angelo Badalamenti. The two began a collaboration that started with Lynch’s 1986 breakthrough success Blue Velvet, and continued it all the way through 2001’s Mulholland Drive.

But Badalamenti’s most well-known contribution to Lynch’s work is his score for the television series Twin Peaks. In fact, when the show’s soundtrack was released back in 1990, it was almost as big a hit as the series was, selling over half a million copies and winning a Grammy award. In many ways, the music is as crucial and identifiable a part of what makes Twin Peaks work as its co-creators Lynch and Mark Frost, or actor Kyle MacLachlan as Agent Cooper.

Now TVLine is reporting that Badalamenti is not only returning to score the new Showtime continuation of Twin Peaks, but is in fact already hard at work on new music for the show, which is set to start filming in Washington state as well as in California next month. Actresses Sheryl Lee (Laura Palmer) and Sherilyn Fenn (Audrey Horne) hinted that Badalamenti was sure to return at a convention in the UK a few months back.

So what can fans expect from a new Badalamenti Twin Peaks score? Appropriately enough, it’s all still a mystery, but I think it’s safe to say a modern rendition of the classic Twin Peaks opening theme, “Falling”,  is called for. One thing’s for sure; if the ultra-secretive David Lynch has his way, we won’t hear a peep of Badalamenti’s new music until the show premieres next year, and not a moment before.
