Rejoice, human beings, because Community has big news for the end of their sixth season. The season finale for the Yahoo! Screen series, titled “Emotional Consequences of Broadcast Television,” will see the return of Greendale alumni Yvette Nicole Brown as Shirley Bennett. The episode will be written by series creator Dan Harmon and producer/writer Chris McKenna, and directed by Rob Schrab, who has been behind the camera for a majority of the episodes in the season, including the season premiere.
So how will Shirley figure into the story? The finale will apparently see Abed goading the study group into imagining a what a TV show version of their next year at Greendale Community College would look like. This opens possibilities for Shirley to show up in one or more imagined versions of Greendale through the episode. These sorts of cerebral episodes, like “Paradigms of Human Memory” and “Remedial Chaos Theory,” are always a highlight of the show, not only because they provide deeper character development, but also because they often break the mold of conventional episodic storytelling. With the show’s creator and the writer of the aforementioned beloved episodes helming the script, this could very well shape up to be the highlight of the newest season.
