Comics Relief: More ALL-NEW MARVEL Images, DC Celebrates Pride Month, & More

In today’s edition of Comics Relief, we have news about how real life scientists decided to nick name a newly discovered dinosaur after a beloved comic book icon, DC Comics’ celebration of LGBT Pride Month, and the latest comics related app for IOS — this time from IDW. But first, Marvel is beginning to give fans a glimpse of their All-New, All-Different relaunch happening this coming fall….

Marvel Teases All-New Direction With New Images

Despite the announcement that Marvel would be unleashing all the info about the “All New, All Different Marvel” at once via a special magazine being published in July (as well as assurances that they wouldn’t tease it out like they did for Secret Wars), it looks like they are changing their minds about that pretty fast. So far, we’ve seen two “All-New Marvel” teaser images in the last two days. What do these images tell us about what’s coming? Iron Man will be front and center (and back in red and gold) Sam Wilson as Captain America will stick around, as will Jane Foster as Thor, plus a female Wolverine (probably X-23) and Old Man Logan are part of the mix as well. There are additional surprises such as the Thing being one of the Guardians of the Galaxy, Daredevil wearing black and red (like his TV incarnation), the return of long-forgotten hero Red Wolf, and more. You can check out both teaser images below:

DC Celebrates LGBT Pride Month In This DC All-Access Video

June is LGBT Pride month, and DC Comics is celebrating with their latest episode of DC All Access, tracing the important LGBT characters in their publishing history. Sure, Marvel might have had Alpah Flight member Northstar come out of the closet first, but DC has since had a ton of important gay characters premiere in their pages, including two major ongoing series featuring gay superheroes: Batwoman and the soon-to-be-released Midnighter. Check out the video below for just a few of them.

Image Announces the Return of Nowhere Men

Fans of Image ComicsNowhere Men, rejoice! After a couple of years, the book by Eric Stephenson, Nate Bellegarde, Jordie Bellaire, and Fonografiks is returning to the stands this fall. The series, about an alternate reality where scientists outrank musicians, actors, and the world’s biggest celebrities received a huge amount of buzz when it came out in 2012. But, since the first arc finished in 2013, many wondered if the story would ever continue. Now Image has confirmed the book’s return this fall and, in the meantime, the Nowhere Men Vol. 1 trade is getting reprinted, complete with a newly recolored cover. [Comics Beat]

Will Hulk Still be Puny Banner in the All-New Marvel?

Among the Marvel icons not seen in the images released in the All-New Marvel teasers is the Incredible Hulk. Marvel’s editor-in-chief Axel Alonso stated that fans who freaked out about a female Thor would likely freak out just as much about what the publisher has planned for old Green Genes. While Alonso remained tight-lipped about just exactly what they have in store for the Hulk, Bleeding Cool is hearing a rumor that the new Hulk will be none other than the evil and crazy Reed Richards from the Ultimate Universe, which means he’ll probably survive Secret Wars. OK, sure…It sounds a little bit far-fetched, but then again Jane Foster as Thor would have seen equally crazy not too long ago. You never know. [Bleeding Cool]

A New Species Of Dinosaur Gets Named After Mike Mignola’s Hellboy

Mike Mignola’s #1 creation, Hellboy, has just made the history books…well, sort of anyway. Scientists have discovered the bones of the triceratops’ close relative, now officially named the Regaliceratops peterhewsi. But if you have a hard time pronouncing that, don’t worry, the scientists who discovered this new species have nicknamed it “Hellboy” thanks to the horns on his head. When asked if the scientists who named the dinosaur after his most well known creation, Mignola said he found out like everyone else…by seeing it on Facebook. When asked where does this  dinosaur’s new name rank among pop culture’s other Hellboy references, Mignola answered, “I’ve got to be honest, this and Hellboy as a question on Jeopardy are pretty high on the list.” [Comic Book]

IDW & Madefire Team-Up for All New IOS App

IDW has created a new app in a partnership with Madefire as a way of opening up their catalogue of comics to an even wider audience than ever before. The brand new app store allows access to over 3,500 comics, as well as 15 free trade paperbacks available digitally. Separate applications are also on the market for their franchises books like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Transformers, and Star Trek. The app is available on iOS, with Android and Windows 8 versions coming soon. Fans that already have the older IDW app will have be automatically updated, and all the comics previously purchased will still remain tethered to that  account. [Comics Beat]

Latest Issue of Star Wars Reveals Major In-Canon SPOILER

So the new Marvel Star Wars books are now the official “New Canon” for all Star Wars-related movies and TV shows and video games going forward, which makes this revelation in Jason Aaron and John Cassaday’s Star Wars title #6 quite the reveal. Looks like our beloved Han Solo lived quite the life before running into Luke, Obi-Wan, and Han in Mos Eisley…well, I’ll just let the image below do all the talking. Will any of this come up in future movies? Doubtful, but who knows…. maybe they made this reveal for a reason.
