Comics Relief: Marvel Finally Gives CAPTAIN AMERICA: WHITE a Release Date

It’s time for the weekend edition of Comics Relief, and we’ve got plenty of news to unpack going into C2E2 this weekend, with all the major comics publishers using the hype surrounding the con to bring attention to some several high profile projects, including one major one from Marvel that has been in the works for over seven years.

Jeph Loeb & Tim Sale’s Captain America: White Finally Set For September Release

In the early 2000s, writer Jeph Loeb and artist Tim Sale produced a seminal run of comics featuring classic Marvel heroes in their earliest incarnations. Each title was color-coded to highlight the significance to the character’s look/state of mind at that stage in their life. We had Spider-Man: Blue, Hulk: Gray, and Daredevil: Yellow — each one was a six issue mini-series, critically acclaimed, and beloved by fans. In 2008, Captain America: White was announced, and a #0 issue even came out, and then…nada. Well, seven years later, it looks like the series is finally hitting this September, according to news coming out of Marvel’s retailer’s summit. Better late than never? [Newsarama]

A Major DC Hero’s Secret Identity Exposed To The World (SPOILERS)

Tons of spoilers are leaking out from early issues of the various Free Comic Book Day titles that have shipped to retailers a bit early, and this is definitely one of the ballsier ones. There are massive, game-changing SPOILERS from here on out in this item folks, so fair warning. Apparently, in DC’s FCBD offering, we find out that Lois Lane reveals Superman’s identity as Clark Kent to the entire world. And here you thought him telling Jimmy Olsen was a big deal. This explains why so much of the post-Convergence art has Supes in jeans and a t-shirt, sans glasses. There are few characters left in comics for whom the secret identity is still a huge part of who they are; Batman, Spider-Man, and Superman are the most prominent. Eventually, DC will have to put this genie back in the bottle, but I hope they find a more elegant way to do it than when Marvel had to undo Spidey’s Civil War identity reveal to the world. How did that one work again?? [Bleeding Cool]

Apparently, Iceman Coming Out Is Part Of Marvel’s Plan To Make You Gay

So you might have heard, but this week, Marvel outed founding X-Men member Iceman as gay (I kinda wrote a whole thing about it). While many people are overjoyed at this revelation, as it turns out, some people are really unhappy. Take Evangelist Franklin Graham, the son and successor of influential Christian minister Billy Graham, who says that Iceman’s outing is part of Marvel’s plans to indoctrinate the youth of America and make them gay.

“This is another attempt to indoctrinate our young people to accept this destructive lifestyle,” he says on his Facebook page. (You know, that’s on the internet, on a computer invented by a gay man, Alan Turing.) I don’t know what’s sadder/funnier…that he thinks you can become gay just by reading about the existence of gay people, or that that many kids still read comics, and not 20-40 somethings. Vampirella/Aliens The Latest Crossover From Dynamite & Dark Horse

In the last Comics Relief, we reported how Dynamite Entertainment will be releasing a Vampirella/Army of Darkness crossover this July. Okay, that one kinda makes sense. This one is just wacky though (but hey, wacky’s good too). Dynamite just announced a new series in their ongoing partnership with Dark Horse Comics that brings together two horror icons in an upcoming new six-issue series by Corinna Bechko and Javier Garcia-Miranda coming out later in 2015, with Bechko calling the Xenomorphs “implacable horror” and Vampirella a “strong woman with attitude.” Well, we already knew that didn’t we? The mini-series is set to debut later this year. [Newsarama]

DC Celebrates 75 Years Of Catwoman

On this very day 75 years ago, Batman #1 hit the stands, giving us the very first appearance of comics’ #1 femme fatale, Catwoman. Selina Kyle has had many memorable incarnations overt the years, especially in TV and film (Julie Newmar, Eartha Kitt, Michelle Pfeiffer and Anne Hathaway to name the best of them.) Now DC All Access has tallied her most bad-ass comic book moments in this special video. Happy birthday, lady, and here’s to crackin’ that whip for another 75 years.

Stan Lee Collaborates With Peter David, Colleen Doran for Illustrated Autobiography

Living legend Stan Lee has announced that he is writing an autobiography, which appropriately enough will be done in graphic novel form. He’s teaming with veteran creator Peter David (X-Factor, The Incredible Hulk) and creator-owned comics icon Colleen Doran (A Distant Soil) to bring it to life. Doran announced the news last week via her blog, and mentioned that the new book will be done in a style more cartoony than she normally draws in. Titled Amazing, Fantastic, Incredible: A Marvelous Memoir, the book will be released through Simon and Schuster this coming October. More Free Comic Book Day SPOILERS- Learn The Identity of Darkseid’s Daughter

One of the long running questions of the New 52 since Justice League #1 in 2011 has been “who is Darkseid’s daughter?” In the new version of the DCU, the reason Darkseid came to earth (and the Justice League formed to fight him) was that he was looking for his long-lost daughter. Well, in another spoiler from Free Comic Book Day, it looks like we finally know.

On Themyscira, on the same night that Queen Hippolyta gave birth to Diana, another Amazon was giving birth to the gray skinned progeny of her apparent affair with Darkseid. (Seriously, how did the mechanics of that work? Darkseid is bigger than the Hulk, for crying out loud. And people say Superman and Lois Lane are dangerous sex.) Apparently, this half Apokoliptian/Amazonian character is called Grail, and will figure largely in the upcoming Darkseid War in the pages of Justice League. Check out our first look at “Grail” below.
