Comics Relief-Holiday Edition: AVENGERS Get A New Digital Series, HE-MAN Gets A Fancy Coffee Table Book, & The Most Comic Booky Hanukkah Menorah Ever

Welcome to the Holiday Edition of Comics Relief! In this week’s column, we’ve got news on the ultimate He-Man coffee table book that every child of the ’80s will want, how Game of Thrones’ George R.R. Martin almost wrote one of of Marvel’s most iconic characters, and, just in time for Christmas, check out how one fan expertly geeked up his holiday season decorations in the coolest way possible…

“Jingle Bells, Batman Smells, Robin laid an egg….”

….And, chances are, you know how the rest goes. Well, this silly piece of Christmas Americana finally made its way to someone’s front yard Holiday decorations, and I’m only amazed it took this long. Every part of the little jingle is represented in some form in this awesome piece of cheerful and very nerdy fan devotion. [Comic Book Resources via Reddit]

Marvel Set To Launch Avengers: Millennium Digital Series in 2015

2015 is going to be a huge year for the Avengers, with Age of Ultron hitting theaters in just a mere four months. To add to the Avengery excitement, Marvel is launching Avengers: Millennium, an all-new digital series from writer Mike Costa and French artists Geoffo and Mast, which will later be collected in hardcover. Judging from the preview art, this is almost the exact same Age of Ultron line-up of the team, plus Spider-Man (could Marvel be dropping any more hints at how badly they want Spidey in the MCU?) The story will find the Avengers travelling through time to 1945, where they’ll meet Cap and Bucky and the Invaders, in a storyline involving HYDRA as the antagonists. [Bleeding Cool]

Fundraiser Launched For Batman Artist Norm Breyfogle

Last week we told you the sad news that longtime Batman artist Norm Breyfogle had suffered a stroke and had to be hospitalized. Now the comics community has rallied around Breyfogle to help pay his medical bills, and are asking for help from the fans as well. Facing mounting bills for prolonged nursing care and daily therapy, family and friends organized a crowdsourcing fundraiser on Breyfogle’s behalf through YouCaring.com. Comic book writer Gerry Conway has also implored Breyfogle’s longtime employer DC Comics to match any donation.

If you want to help, HERE is the link to donate to Breyfogle’s fund. [Newsarama]

George R.R. Martin Almost Wrote A Marvel Title

The prospect of Game of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin tackling a Marvel title is the kind of thing nerd dreams are made of…and recently, we found out that it actually almost happened, but that Marvel thought that Martin’s demands for writing “seemed unworkable.” So just what were Martin’s demands, and who was the character in the Marvel Universe he most wanted to play with? Turns out it was Dr. Strange. And it turns out his demands weren’t all the crazy when you think about.

Speaking to MTV, Martin explains ““I don’t know what my story angle would be. The character I’d have the most fun writing would be Dr Strange, the master of the mystic arts, he was always one of my favorites…but before I did that I’d have my lawyers meet with Marvel’s lawyers and work out an iron-clad contract that would say that whatever I did in the story would continue on forever and would never be retconned, rebooted or re-imagined out of the universe when some later writer decided to mess around with it” Yeah OK, I could see how that wouldn’t work in Marvel’s favor, with their tendency towards retcons. Besides, I’m sure A Song of Ice and Fire fans don’t really want Martin dabbling around in the Marvel Universe right now, distracting him from finishing his series of novels. [MTV]

Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch Debut New Costumes, Marvel Hints Even More At The Two No Longer Being Mutants

Speaking of Marvel retcons, in the images this week released by Marvel by artist Daniel Acuna for the new Uncanny Avengers series set to hit next year, we get a good look at the new costumes worn by superpowered twins Pietro and Wanda Maximoff, a/k/a Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch. The accompanying text with the images seems to stress even more that Marvel is retconning their blood relation to Magneto, and very possibly their roles as mutants as well. [Comic Book Resources]
