Comics Relief: FAITH Gets Ongoing Series at Valiant

It’s that time… time for your mid-week dose of all the comics news that’s good to give in Comics Relief. There’s lots of news from publisher Image Comics from their big Image Expo, but before we get to that, a fan favorite character is finally set to get her own ongoing series over at Valiant Comics. Read on for the scoop…

Faith Gets Her Own Ongoing Series At Valiant This Summer

There are only three issues for the character’s first ever miniseries out on the stands, but Faith is already getting her own ongoing Valiant Comics series this July. Faith was originally created in the pages of Harbinger way back in 1992 and then reintroduced in 2012 before getting her own miniseries by writer Jody Houser and artists Francis Portela and Marguerite Sauvage. Houser and Sauvage are returning for the ongoing series, joined by artist Pere Perez.

Valiant Editor-in-Chief Warren Simons shared, “Faith’s solo debut hit stands, no matter where we’ve turned – from conventions to comic shops to social media – fans all over the globe have called on Valiant to further Faith’s adventures beyond four issues alone. Now that day has come, and we’re proud to say that Faith’s journey will continue in 2016 and beyond.” The final issue of the miniseries, Faith #4, is scheduled for release April 27. The new Faith ongoing is scheduled to debut July 20. [Newsarama]

Tons Of New Series Announcements At This Year’s Image Comics Expo

This year’s Image Comics Expo took place this week, the publisher’s chance to showcase their upcoming slate of titles. Among some of the highlights this year are the following books:

Glitterbomb, with artist Djibril Morissette, described as a “Hollywood horror.” The series follows an actress who can no longer get any roles due to her age and sets out “to bring the entire system crashing down as violently as possible.”

Vs, by Ivan Brandon and Secret Wars artist Esad Ribic  set in a world where war has become privatized and televised.

Comics legend Howard Chaykin announced The Divided States of Hysteria, which tells the story of the next major terrorist attack on US soil. Chaykin describes it as taking place “sometime later this afternoon.” He says he lives in constant anxiety about such an attack. “I wake up every morning and I worry about everything.”

Maybe the coolest sounding so far is Rockstars, from Joe Harris and Megan Hutchinson, which is a rock-and-roll supernatural thriller described as “Almost Famous meets Supernatural.” In this series, Jackie Mayer is a super-music nerd and a student of rock mythology. He knows the lost secrets and truths behind musical urban legends and he’s connected to the metaphysical undercurrent of music that only he can sense. Each story arc will center on a different era of music, from the British Invasion to ’80s Hair Metal.

Wonder Woman’s Brian Azzarello announced Moonshine with artist Eduardo Risso, which featured “mobsters, werewolves, and hillbillies” during the Prohibition era.

There were many more exciting announcements made at Image Expo, and you can read the round-up of them all right here: [Comics Alliance]

Is This What Happens To New 52 Superman in DC Comics’ Rebirth? (Spoilers)

One of the things we know about DC’s big upcoming Rebirth is that the New 52 Superman won’t be a part of it, replaced by the classic pre-Flashpoint Supes, married to Lois Lane and with a son. So what happened to the t-shirt wearing, Wonder Woman dating Kal-El of the New 52?

Well, if this week’s Superman #51 by Peter Tomasi and Mikel Janin is any indication — and SPOILERS from here on out — it looks like Superman is kicking the bucket. Again. Apparently, all his recent trauma, from the firepits of Apokolips to the torture chamber at ARGUS, has taken its toll on the Man of Steel, and he’s joining both sets of parents in the great beyond. RIP Nu-Clark. I’ll miss ya, but I won’t miss that Mandarin collar. [CBR]

Lumberjanes Receives GLAAD Media Award

BOOM! Studios‘ breakout hit series Lumberjanes beat out both Marvel and DC at the GLAAD Media Awards this past weekend for Outstanding Comic Book Series, beating out titles from the big two like Midnighter and Angela: Queen of Hel.

Lumberjanes, by Noelle Stevenson, Shannon Watters, Kat Leyh, Carolyn Nowak and Brooke Allen, is about five teenage girls at a summer camp who solve mysteries and meet strange creatures. Unlike other nominees, Lumberjanes is an all-ages book, that shows the difficulty in dealing with one’s sexuality as a young teen. Congrats to everyone over at BOOM! Studios for the big win. Image Comics Teams Up Image Direct With DCBS

In an announcement made ahead of this week’s Image Expo, publisher Image Comics has announced that its print subscription service, Image Direct, is now being managed and fulfilled by Discount Comic Book Service (DCBS). Image Direct, which was first launched in 2015, will now be selling products at 30% off retail and be expanding to sell some Image Comics’ merchandise.

In a statement from Image Comics’ Corey Murphy, he said “DCBS has long been one of our most supportive accounts and we’re so excited to be able to partner with them and expand the reach of Image Direct. Retailers are the backbone to this industry, but unfortunately many of our fans do not live in areas close by a local comic shop. We hope through DCBS and Image Direct we can fix that and widen the audience for creator-owned comics and merchandise.” For more info, click on the following link: [Newsarama]
