Mike Mignola’s Original Sketch For Hellboy Gets A Pair of statues from Mondo

Mike Mignola’s original design for Hellboy was a little bit different than what we ended up with; more heavy metal album cover and less pulp adventure superhero character. There was no trenchcoat, Right Hand of Doom, sideburns, etc. Now Mignola’s original design for Big Red is coming to life, as a statue coming from Mondo. The statue will be 12″, and will be offered in two versions: a full-color Hellboy (with a paint app designed by regular Hellboy colorist Dave Stewart) or a black and white version based on the preliminary sketch. Both statues are slated to hit in the fourth quarter of this year, and  you can pre-order either version now over on Mondo’s site. [Comics Alliance]

WTF Comics News Of the week: 20 Year old student calls classic books like Persepolis, Sandman “pornography”

In the biggest comic book related WTF news of the week, a 20-year-old student named Tara Shultz who is attending Crafton Hills College in Yucaipa, California, was so upset by the “graphic content” in four of the graphic novels required by her English 250 course, “the study of the graphic novel as a viable medium of literature through readings, in-class discussion and analytical assignments,” that she and her parents are seeking to have them banned all together by the administration.

The book that offended her the most was Persepolis, Marjane Satrapi’s memoir about growing up during the Iranian revolution. But it doesn’t end there… she was also upset by Alison Bechdel’s Fun Home, Y: The Last Man, and Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman: The Doll’s House, due to the “depictions of sex, violence and obscenities.” She said “I didn’t expect to open the book and see that graphic material within, I expected Batman and Robin, not pornography.” We here at Nerdist have no real comment on this story, aside from just letting it all speak for itself. DC Celebrates 75 years of Green Lantern this fall

2015 is the Anniversary year of a lot of major DC characters like The Joker, Robin, The Flash and more, and DC has been celebrating by giving each of those characters a spotlight month of variant covers spread across the entire superhero line. Now DC has announced that October is going to celebrate seventy-five years of Green Lantern, with variant covers on twenty-five different books. Interestingly, although this is the 75th anniversary anniversary of the original Green Lantern, Alan Scott, he only appears on two covers, and John Stewart just appears on one. As usual, Hal Jordan is hogging all the spotlight.

Wonder how Guy Gardner feels about that? Check out all the covers in our gallery below [IGN]
