Comic-Con and Disney’s D23 Expo Scheduled One Week Apart in 2017

This year’s San Diego Comic-Con is now behind us, but the Comic-Con International organization is already thinking ahead towards 2017: July 19 – 23, to be exact. In fact, they have already opened applications for exhibitors.

Here’s the kicker, though — thanks to Newsarama, we’ve learned that next year’s SDCC will come just one week after Disney’s bi-annual D23 Expo in Anaheim. Which means two of the world’s biggest pop culture conventions will be happening at essentially the same time, and will be more or less competing for attention from the media.

So what does this all mean for the fans? For starters, don’t expect much Star Wars, Marvel, or Pixar news at SDCC next year at all, since presentations from Lucasfilm and and Marvel Studios will likely be saved for Disney’s own homegrown convention. Most previews or important news concerning movies like Star Wars Episode VIII, the Han Solo film, Thor Ragnarok, Avengers: Infinity War, Black Panther, Ant-Man and the Wasp, and Toy Story 4 won’t have a huge presence at Comic-Con.

But that hardly means that Comic-Con will be short of potentially big things of their own that year to fill up Hall H — there’s still Justice League, which will no doubt have an even bigger presence at SDCC next year, and movies like Ready Player One, Deadpool 2, Jurassic World 2, several potential DC Comics based films, and other Marvel/Fox films as well. And that’s just for starters. Losing Disney that year won’t leave Comic-Con empty handed.

What do you think of these two big conventions happening so close to one another? Let us know down in the comments.
