Akaneiro #1 | Justin Aclin and Vasilis Lolos

Somehow the notion of American McGee taking elements from Japanese folklore and demonology, high fantasy and the classic tale of Little Red Riding Hood and putting it in a blender just makes perfect sense. The fact that Dark Horse is transforming the ethereal work into a three-issue mini-series also makes perfect sense. After speaking with Justin Aclin and reading the first issue, I feel confident in wholeheartedly recommending this twisted take on a classic tale that pits a folklore favorite against all manner of demons, yokai, and otherworldly obstacles as she fights to save the world itself. Moving at an energizing pace, Aclin’s writing, paired with Vasilis Lolos’ stunning artwork, makes for a woozy, wonderful thrill ride through the mind of American McGee, and a sterling addition to this week’s pull list.

X-Men: Legacy #11 | Si Spurrier, Paul Davidson and Tan Eng Huat

If you’re not currently reading Si Spurrier’s excellent X-Men: Legacy, go ahead and find the last ten issues and read them. I’ll wait. All caught up? Good. The ongoing saga of Legion, Charles Xavier’s Omega-level mutant son, his obsession with a prophecy that says he’ll destroy mutantkind, and his ongoing battle with dissociative identity disorder is one of the most compelling books in stores right now. Each personality controls a different aspect of Legion’s considerable powers, and he’s struck a deal with one of his many devils to find out whether or not the predictions are true: he’s going to undergo a procedure that will supposedly remove his mutant powers. In a series so focused on identity and its many facets and constructs, this is one of the most fascinating storylines of all, especially considering how defining of an identity being a mutant is within the MCU. Go ahead and do yourself a favor – read this book and thank me later.

Adventure Time #16 | Ryan North, Shelli Paroline, and Braden Lamb

What time is it? You already know the answer. The best all-ages series of 2013 keeps getting better, as writer Ryan North kicks off a brand-new arc featuring old favorites like the Ice King and Jake and Finn struggling with what it means to be “TRUE ULTIMATE HEROES,” making this a perfect jumping on point for new readers, both young and old.
