With so much happening at E3, one could almost forget that there’s a brand new barrage of comic books coming our way today. Fortunately, much like the inexorable march of time, you can always count on Comic Book Day to come week in and week out like clockwork. Once you’ve finished this week’s haul, why not go see a little indie gem called Man of Steel? It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s a really good film!

Superman Unchained #1 | Scott Snyder and Jim Lee

It’s only fitting that a brand new Superman title drops the same week as Man of Steel crashlands into theaters like a rocket ship from cinematic Krypton. Much like the film, Superman Unchained is the real deal. Accept no substitutes. Penned by DC’s current wunderkind Scott Snyder and illustrated by co-publisher Jim Lee, Superman Unchained is a terrifically entertaining book and looks like it could be the start of something beautiful. Lex Luthor, secret satellites and mysteries abound in Unbound, making it a surefire pick for anyone looking to pad out their pull list this week with the world’s finest titles.

X #2 | Duane Swierczynski and Eric Nguyen

Imagine if Batman had a Tyler Durden figure: That’s exactly who X would be. Dark Horse’s uber-violent 90s hero is back with a vengeance, and is even more over the top in his judicious dispensation of jaw-breaking justice than ever before, thanks to the grisly scenarios cooked up by Duane Swierczynski and illustrated by Eric Nguyen. Issue two sees X continuing his one-man crusade against the decidedly corrupt moral fiber of Arcadia and we find a scumbag criminal overlord – how should I put this? – losing face in the community. Unrelenting, visceral, but consistently compelling, X is a system shock in the best way possible. This is superheroism reduced to the id and then doused in bath salts. It’s an electric, gripping ride and it’s mercifully brief. Like the best rollercoasters, it’s relative brevity only serves to heighten the thrills contained therein.

Deadpool #11 | Gerry Duggan, Brian Posehn and Mike Hawthorne

See what I mean? The Merc with a Mouth faces off against Mephisto in a barnburner of an issue. Duggan and Posehn continue to craft seriously funny stories with solid action and enough of an emotional hook to keep us coming back for more. Plus, they’re not afraid to ask the hard hitting questions. For the record, turkey is the Michael Phelps to ham’s that-one-French-dude in the Sandwich Olympics.
