Well, thank goodness for that, because Comic Book Day is no place for conflict; it’s a place for comic book fans to voraciously consume all the things they love in a considerate, thoughtful manner. With offerings like a new Hellboy in Hell, The Star Wars, and much more, you have an awful lot to be thankful for.

Hellboy in Hell #5 | Mike Mignola and Dave Stewart

Mike Mignola’s journey into Hell continues to delight with the latest issue of the sporadically released but consistently excellent Hellboy in Hell. Mignola has referred to this as his “most important book”, and while that’s a subject that’s up for debate, it’s hard to complain when the stories are so damn good. Issue #5 loosely adapts one of Grimm’s lesser known Fairy Tales, The Devil and His Grandmother, finding Hellboy coming across a strange, lost-looking man who sold his soul for a golden whip that makes money appear wherever it strikes. Accentuated by Mignola’s alternately ethereal and surreally Gothic artwork and Stewart’s pitch perfect colors, issue 5 is a dreamy, quietly menacing story that finds our hero continuing his storybook journey through world folklore as it plays out against an everchanging hellscape. Whether or not you think this is Mignola’s most important book, it’s definitely one of his most enjoyable and one of the best books you can buy (if and when it comes out).

Action Comics #26 | Greg Pak and Aaron Kuder

There’s something to be said for the one-off story. Nowadays, it almost seems to be a relic of comic book storytelling, as everything feels the need to be part of some 9-part, mega crossover event that will shake the very foundations of the universe to its core. With Action Comics #26, that is not the case at all, and it makes for one hell of an enjoyable adventure. What starts out as Superman battling what looks like an interdimensional lightning-spewing space dinosaur to save Lana Lang quickly turns into a sweeter, more introspective piece, as Supes realizes the beast isn’t roaring, but trying to communicate. Alternating between the rapidly escalating conflict in real time and a poignant, recently unearthed memory of Clark and his father, the story is expertly paced, unexpectedly touching, and offers up some killer action sequences courtesy of Aaron Kuder’s highly kinetic art style. If you’re looking for a solid detox after all the Trinity War insanity, then look no further than the high adventure of Action Comics #26.

The Star Wars #4 | J.W. Rinzler, Mike Mayhew, and Rain Beredo

I’m not sure why I consider The Star Wars to be one of my guilty pleasures. Maybe it’s because, at times, I’m enjoying its oddball sensibilities and uncanny valley qualities more than the original Star Wars saga. Saying that might seem sacrilegious to some, but I’m having so much fun reading it that I don’t really care. Luke Skywalker looks like George Lucas on steroids, Annikin and Whitsun both look like alternative Macklemore haircuts, and Han Solo looks like Swamp Thing wearing tactical overalls. Seriously, what the hell is going on here? It’s a bit like trying to spot the differences between the two pictures at the back of a Highlights magazine, but with way more laser swords and interstellar awesomeness. The Star Wars is and has been an electrifying read and a fascinating look into a very different series than the Star Wars we know and love today. Still, even after you get over all the differences, you can see what makes this universe so special and there’s still plenty of emotionality and limb-slicing lightsaber action to find herein, and keep us coming back for more. From the kickass artwork to the runaway freight train narrative, this mini-series is a complete and utter blast to read.
